Lin Shidong and Wen Ruibo exit WTT Contender Zagreb 2026

No.1 seed Lin Shidong and No.3 seed Wen Ruibo have both crashed out in the Round of 16 at WTT Contender Zagreb 2026, with two five-game defeats reshaping the Men’s Singles landscape at Arena Zagreb.

Lin, who arrived as World No.5 and one of the tournament favourites, was beaten by compatriot Chen Junsong in a dramatic decider, while Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka edged Wen after surviving a late surge. The double upset matters because it removes two of the top contenders before the quarterfinal stage and leaves the title race far more open than expected.

Lin Shidong stunned by Chen Junsong in five-game thriller

Lin Shidong’s Round of 16 exit came after a tense five-game battle with Chen Junsong, who triumphed 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 16-14. Lin had been among the favourites to go deep in Zagreb, with the article noting a Men’s Singles trophy drought stretching back to early 2025.

The match began in Lin’s favour as he took the opening game. He also looked well placed to build a commanding lead when he held a 6-9 advantage in the second. However, Chen flipped the momentum by firing off five winners in a row to level the match, and then followed up by taking Game Three by the same 11-9 scoreline.

Lin responded in Game Four to force a deciding fifth, setting up what became an “absolutely epic” finale. Lin again started strongly, moving 3-7 ahead, but Chen once more reeled him back in by winning four straight points to draw level. From there, the decider became a sequence of narrow swings, with both players trading one-point leads deep into the game.

In the closing stages, Chen dropped the first match point, then saved two of his own. The pressure continued to rise as Chen missed and then saved another, before finally securing the two points required to complete the upset and book his quarterfinal place. For Lin, it was a painful end to a campaign that had begun with expectations of a title challenge.

Wen Ruibo falls as Shinozuka holds nerve in the decider

On Table 1, No.3 seed Wen Ruibo also went out over five games, with Hiroto Shinozuka advancing after a 11-3, 15-13, 7-11, 5-11, 12-10 win. Shinozuka’s fast start set the tone, as he stormed through the first game and then navigated a chaotic second game that featured multiple swings in control.

In Game Two, Shinozuka saved four game points, then missed three of his own, before eventually doubling his match lead. Wen then mounted a comeback, roaring back to take Games Three and Four and appearing to seize momentum heading into the deciding game.

But Shinozuka made the better start in the fifth and created three match points. Wen produced a last-gasp response by saving all three, yet could not turn that escape into a full reversal, as Shinozuka found the final points needed to move into the quarterfinals.

What the upsets mean for the draws in Zagreb

With Lin Shidong and Wen Ruibo eliminated, the Men’s Singles competition has been described as “blown wide open” in Zagreb. Only three seeded players remain in the draw: Dang Qiu, Chen Yuanyu and An Jaehyun. The early exits of the No.1 and No.3 seeds significantly change the shape of the quarterfinal stage and beyond, creating opportunities for those still standing to push for the title.

In contrast, the Women’s Singles Main Draw followed a more expected script, with the top seeds progressing. No.1 seed Miwa Harimoto, No.2 seed Zhu Yuling and No.3 seed Chen Yi all advanced, keeping the leading contenders on course as the tournament moves forward.

As WTT Contender Zagreb 2026 continues, attention will now shift to how the remaining seeded men handle the pressure of an opened-up bracket, while the women’s event continues to feature the top names moving through the rounds.
