PV Sindhu, Tanvi Sharma Reach Australian Open Quarterfinals

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and teenager Tanvi Sharma moved into the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Australian Open Super 500 badminton tournament in Sydney on Thursday, both winning in straight games in all-Indian round of 16 clashes. The results keep India strongly represented deep into the draw, with Sindhu continuing her seeded run and Tanvi extending a breakout week after a notable upset a day earlier.

Third seed Sindhu defeated compatriot Isharani Baruah 22-20, 21-12 in a 42-minute match. In the other all-Indian contest, 17-year-old Tanvi beat Malvika Bansod 21-13, 21-15 to progress to the last eight.

Quarterfinal matchups set after all-Indian wins

Sindhu’s straight-game victory over Baruah was built on a tight opening game before she pulled away in the second. The 22-20 first game underlined the pressure of a knockout contest between compatriots, while the 21-12 follow-up showed Sindhu’s ability to take control as the match wore on.

Tanvi’s run has drawn attention this week, and she backed it up with another composed performance. On Wednesday, she stunned fifth seed and world No. 11 Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei, and she followed that up by beating Bansod 21-13, 21-15 to keep her campaign alive.

The quarterfinals now present contrasting tests for the two Indians. Sindhu is set to face Chen Su Yu of Chinese Taipei. Tanvi, meanwhile, has been handed a major challenge as she is next up against top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

Elsewhere in women’s singles, Tanya Hemanth’s campaign ended in the round of 16. She went down 12-21, 15-21 to second seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, bringing an end to India’s involvement in that section of the draw.

India also had success in men’s doubles, where the pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun advanced to the quarterfinals. They beat the Australian combination of Michael Owen and Dylan Soedjasa 21-17, 21-7, a result that sets up a next-round meeting with Chen Cheng Kuan and Liu Kuang Heng of Chinese Taipei.

In mixed doubles, however, Dhruv Rawat and K Maneesha bowed out in the second round. The Indian duo lost 19-21, 18-21 to Japan’s Akira Koga and Natsu Saito, ending their run in Sydney.

Why these results matter for India in Sydney

With the tournament reaching the quarterfinal stage, India’s presence across multiple events remains significant. Sindhu’s progress as the third seed keeps a proven big-match player in contention, while Tanvi’s continued advancement adds a fresh storyline to the week after her earlier win over a higher-ranked, seeded opponent.

The draw now offers clear benchmarks: Sindhu’s next match against Chen Su Yu will determine whether she can convert her seeded position into a deeper run, while Tanvi’s meeting with top seed Akane Yamaguchi represents a major step up in difficulty and a chance to test her momentum against the tournament’s leading contender.

In doubles, the men’s pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun have given India another quarterfinal entry, underlining that the challenge is not limited to singles alone. At the same time, the exits of Tanya Hemanth in women’s singles and Rawat-Maneesha in mixed doubles show how narrow the margins are at Super 500 level, where seeded opponents and tight two-game matches can quickly decide a campaign.

As the Australian Open Super 500 moves into its decisive rounds, India will look to convert these quarterfinal berths into semifinal appearances, with Sindhu and Tanvi carrying the spotlight in women’s singles and the men’s doubles pair aiming to extend their run.
