Brazil held 1-1 by Morocco as Vinicius Jr rescues Group C point

Brazil and Morocco shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Group C at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, with Vinicius Jr cancelling out Ismael Saibari’s opener in New York New Jersey.

Morocco struck first through Saibari in the 21st minute, but Brazil responded quickly when Vinicius Jr produced an outstanding finish on 32 minutes. The result leaves two of the group’s headline teams level after a meeting that featured big moments at both ends and late Morocco pressure that tested Alisson.

How the goals arrived in New York New Jersey

Morocco’s breakthrough came from a sharp, incisive move that caught Brazil’s back line. Brahim Diaz split the defence with a delightfully-weighted through ball, and Saibari ran onto it before lifting his finish beyond the on-rushing Alisson to make it 1-0.

Brazil’s reply was emphatic and came from a situation that initially looked harmless. Vinicius Jr received the ball from Bruno Guimaraes wide and deep on the left edge of the penalty area. With little apparent danger, he cut back inside and unleashed a blistering right-footed effort that rocketed past Yassine Bounou to level the match at 1-1.

With the scores tied, Brazil pushed for a lead before the break. Lucas Paqueta attempted an acrobatic effort as half-time approached, but Bounou reacted well, diving to his left to push the ball away and keep Morocco level heading into the interval.

Second-half chances and late saves

The second period continued in the same competitive vein, with both sides creating opportunities. Bounou remained a key figure for Morocco, staying well-positioned when Vinicius delivered a cut-back for Raphinha, ensuring Brazil could not turn promising play into a second goal.

Morocco’s best surge came late, and Brazil needed Alisson to preserve the draw in added time. The goalkeeper first dived to block a long-range effort from Neil El Aynaoui, then reacted swiftly to smother Ayoube Amaimouni’s follow-up, a sequence that proved decisive in keeping the score at 1-1.

The match ended all square in front of a packed stadium, with both teams showing why they are viewed as major contenders in the tournament.

Key takeaways: standout performer, stat and reaction

Vinicius Jr was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match after his outstanding equaliser and continued influence in Brazil’s attacking play.

A notable statistic underlined the unusual nature of the result for Brazil when Vinicius scores: this was the first match in which he has scored for the Seleção that did not end in victory. The previous eight occasions all helped secure a win.

After the game, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti pointed to a slow start and areas to improve, saying: “I think we didn’t start very well, I’m a little worried. We lost a lot of duels and possession, but we improved in the second half of a difficult match, because Morocco is a good team. In the first half, we had difficulty getting out of the pressure, we could have had more control. [Was I] Satisfied? Not really. I expected a better start. But things can happen. Now I’m going to focus on the next game.”

Brazil defender Danilo felt the point was deserved, adding: “The draw was fair because in the second half we managed to push them back. And, obviously, we had opportunities to score more goals. I think in this type of match we also have to be more clinical. If you have an opportunity, you have to take it, because that’s how it works.”

Bruno Guimaraes highlighted early issues for Brazil, saying: “We made a lot of passing errors, which made our start to the match very difficult. We ended up suffering a lot of counter-attacks. The way we play, we can’t give away so much space like we did. I think the pressure of a debut is always difficult, it’s never easy. After the goal, we improved, but the reflection of today is that we need to improve.”

From Morocco’s perspective, Samir El Mourabet welcomed the outcome while noting there were chances to take more, saying: “It’s a good result against Brazil, now we’ll focus on what comes next. It was an emotional match, playing in the World Cup was a childhood dream, but once you’re on the pitch, you have to stay focused and give it your all. We know we could have scored a few more goals and we’ll need to use that as motivation for the next matches.”
