Neeraj Chopra to open season at Doha Diamond League on June 19

Neeraj Chopra is set to return to competition at the Doha Diamond League on June 19 after recovering from a back injury

Neeraj Chopra will begin his season at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, ending uncertainty around his return to competition after a back injury delayed his comeback. The double Olympic medallist in javelin has not competed since finishing eighth at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year, where he also suffered the injury.

The announcement also comes a day after the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) provisionally added Chopra to India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 squad, a move that underlines both his recovery and the expectation that he will compete in multiple meets this month.

AFI selection committee chairman Adille Sumariwalla said Chopra has recovered and is ready to compete in the coming days, adding that Chopra asked to be included and that the federation expects him to participate in a few meets this month.

AFI selection, qualification mark and India’s javelin picture

While Chopra has been provisionally added to the Commonwealth Games 2026 squad, he will still need to meet the AFI’s qualification standard. Sumariwalla said Chopra would have to clear the qualification mark of 82.61m, the same requirement applied to other athletes.

With Chopra included, India currently have three javelin throwers in the squad: Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh. Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh have already met the qualification mark at the Indian Athletics Series.

Chopra’s return at Doha is significant because it serves as his season opener after a long competitive break. His last outing was at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he finished eighth, and the back injury sustained there pushed back his plans. The Doha Diamond League now becomes the first major checkpoint in his return, both in terms of performance and in building competitive rhythm.

Why Doha matters for Chopra

Doha has been described as a happy hunting ground for Chopra and is considered one of the best venues for javelin throwers. The meet also carries recent personal significance: at last year’s Doha Diamond League, Chopra crossed the 90m mark for the first time, a milestone that elevated expectations around his peak potential.

That history adds extra context to his June 19 start. A return to a venue where he previously achieved a landmark throw provides a familiar setting as he resumes competition after injury recovery and time away from events.

Tough Doha Diamond League field led by Rumesh Pathirage

Chopra is set to face a strong field at the Doha Diamond League, led by world leader Rumesh Pathirage. The South Asian javelin thrower has the world lead with 92.62m and is the only athlete to have crossed the 90m mark this season, according to the report.

Pathirage, 23, is described as the latest South Asian javelin sensation and will headline the competition Chopra is returning to. He said competing against the world’s best athletes is a dream come true and that he is excited to line up in Doha, where many memorable javelin competitions have taken place. The report also notes that Pathirage made his Diamond League debut in Rabat in May.

Beyond Pathirage, the Doha field includes reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott, former world champion Anderson Peters, Kenyan javelin thrower Julius Yego, and former Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch. The depth of the entry list sets up a high-level early-season test for Chopra as he resumes competition.

For Chopra, the June 19 meet is not only a return date but also an immediate opportunity to measure himself against a field featuring the season’s standout mark and multiple global medal winners. With AFI also requiring him to breach the 82.61m qualification standard, Doha becomes a key moment in his season restart and in the broader context of India’s javelin contingent heading toward future major events.
