Mokoena penalty earns South Africa 1-1 draw with Czechia

Teboho Mokoena’s late spot-kick wiped out Michal Sadilek’s early opener as Czechia and South Africa drew 1-1 in Group A at the FIFA World Cup 2026

South Africa rescued a 1-1 draw against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium after Teboho Mokoena converted an 83rd-minute penalty to cancel out Michal Sadilek’s early goal in Group A of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Sadilek struck in the sixth minute to put Czechia ahead, but South Africa’s late spot-kick ensured both teams finished the match with one point apiece in the group.

How the match unfolded in Atlanta

Czechia delivered the “fast start” their coach Miroslav Koubek had called for, taking the lead inside the opening minutes. Adam Hlozek provided the cross from the right, and Alexandr Sojka’s first-time touch released Sadilek, who lashed his finish past Ronwen Williams to make it 1-0.

The goal also made tournament history. Sadilek’s strike was recorded as the fastest of the World Cup so far, coming after five minutes and eight seconds. The report noted that Felix Nmecha took eight seconds longer when scoring for Germany against Curaçao.

South Africa looked for a route back into the contest after the break. Coach Hugo Broos introduced Relebohile Mofokeng for the second half, and the 21-year-old “flickered his genius” as South Africa pushed for an equaliser.

For long stretches, Czechia appeared on course to protect their advantage. The report highlighted a backline “bossed by the impressive Ladislav Krejci,” with Czechia holding firm as the match moved into its closing stages.

The turning point arrived late on when Pavel Sulc was penalised for handball. Mokoena stepped up and sent Matej Kovar the wrong way from the spot, levelling the match at 1-1 in the 83rd minute and ensuring South Africa left with a point.

What the draw means in Group A

The 1-1 result left Czechia and South Africa on one point each in Group A after two matches, with both sides still looking to build momentum in the group phase.

Koubek said Czechia were “disappointed” with the outcome, adding that his side were “closer to winning” based on the chances, but “made a mistake that cost us.” He also felt Czechia “played better in the second half” despite the late concession.

Broos, meanwhile, praised his team’s display and mentality. “I’m very proud of my team,” he said, describing his side as aggressive and committed to creating chances. He acknowledged errors but underlined that Czechia are “powerful and very tall,” adding that South Africa “did very well.” Broos also pointed ahead, saying his team “just have to win the game against Korea Republic,” while noting it will be “very difficult too.”

With the points shared in Atlanta, both teams will take encouragement from different aspects of the performance: Czechia from their early incision and defensive resilience for much of the match, and South Africa from their persistence and late composure from the penalty spot.
