Jon Rahm Confirms Amgen Irish Open Return at Doonbeg

Jon Rahm has committed to the Amgen Irish Open in September, adding another DP World Tour start as he looks to remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection

Jon Rahm has confirmed he will return to the Amgen Irish Open in September, adding the DP World Tour event at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg to his schedule as he looks to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup.

The Spaniard’s commitment follows an agreement in May which saw him pay all outstanding fines related to playing on LIV Golf and also agree to appear in several tournaments this year. The Genesis Scottish Open is one of those events, and Rahm has now added the Irish Open to the list.

Rahm is a two-time winner of the Irish Open and has repeatedly pointed to it as an event he missed playing since joining LIV, making his return a notable boost for the tournament’s field.

Rahm set for September return at Trump International Doonbeg

Rahm said he is eager to get back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open, an event he has described as a special week on the calendar.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open,” said Rahm. “Winning this tournament twice means a lot to me and it’s always a place I enjoy playing. The courses, the fans and the challenge of links golf make it a special week.”

The 31-year-old will chase a third Irish Open title when the tournament is played at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg from September 10-13. Rahm won the first of his 10 DP World Tour titles at the Irish Open at Portstewart in 2017, then claimed the title again at Lahinch in 2019.

Rahm is set to headline the event alongside Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, with Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald also listed among the notable names in the line-up. Tyrell Hatton, Rahm’s Legion XIII teammate, is also included in the field mentioned.

Rahm’s addition is significant for the Irish Open as it strengthens what is described as a stellar field at Doonbeg. It also underlines the importance of DP World Tour starts for Rahm as he targets the minimum number of appearances required to satisfy Ryder Cup qualifying criteria.

In the same context, Rahm is also planning further DP World Tour appearances later in the year, with the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the Spanish Open and the Dunhill Links all referenced as events he intends to play. However, the expected arrival of his fourth child in the autumn may mean he misses one of those tournaments.

Why Rahm’s commitment matters for the Irish Open and Ryder Cup picture

Rahm confirming his place at Doonbeg is described as a major boost for the Irish Open, particularly with Ireland set to host the Ryder Cup again next year at Adare Manor. His return also provides him with another opportunity to add DP World Tour starts, a key factor given the ongoing situation involving LIV Golf and the wider professional landscape, which the report notes shows no signs of a quick solution.

For the Irish Open itself, Rahm’s presence adds a proven champion to a field already featuring McIlroy and Lowry, and it sets up a high-profile week of links golf in September at Doonbeg.
