Shubman Gill’s 154 and Ishan Kishan’s 125 drove India past 400 and set up a commanding 170-run win over Afghanistan in the second ODI, giving India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. India made 402 in 49.5 overs before Afghanistan were bowled out for 232, with Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar taking three wickets each.

The match turned decisively during a blistering third-wicket partnership between Gill and Kishan, who added 224 off 141 balls as India surged from early trouble to a total that proved far beyond Afghanistan’s reach. Even a late Afghanistan fightback with the ball could only limit the damage after India had threatened to go well beyond 450.

Gill-Kishan stand powers India to 402 despite late collapse

Afghanistan struck early when Mohammad Saleem claimed his maiden ODI wicket, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over as Jaiswal cut to backward point. Gill, however, quickly settled into rhythm, beginning with a cover-drive off AM Ghazanfar, while Rohit Sharma added early impetus with back-to-back front-foot pulls as India passed fifty in the seventh over.

Nangeyalia Kharote’s spell began with a near waist-high full toss down leg that Gill dispatched over deep fine leg, but Afghanistan found a key breakthrough when Rashid Khan deceived Rohit with a skiddy googly to dismiss him for 48. The wicket did not slow India’s momentum for long; instead, it ushered in the defining phase of the innings.

Gill reached his fifty from 38 balls, striking a six off Kharote over wide long-on. Kishan started more quietly, bringing up his half-century from 52 balls, his first ODI fifty since September 2023, before accelerating sharply. He went after Ghazanfar and then took on Hashmatullah Shahidi’s offspin, before launching Rashid for two sixes and a four as the partnership gathered pace.

Gill’s century came from 77 balls, worked through square leg off Bilal Sami. In the same over, Kishan struck three consecutive fours to reach his own hundred—his second in ODIs and his first since his 210 against Bangladesh in December 2022. Kishan’s split told the story of his innings: 52 balls for his first fifty and just 19 for his second.

India were 193 for 2 after 28 overs, and then tore into Afghanistan’s attack, scoring 114 runs in the next eight overs as the run rate climbed beyond 8.5. Kishan hit two one-handed sixes off Kharote but fell attempting a third, mistiming to deep midwicket. Conditions were taxing in the heat, with Rashid leaving the field limping and Gill calling for the physio multiple times.

Gill still pushed on to 150 from 109 balls, but Afghanistan clawed back late. Kharote struck twice in two balls, first removing Gill when a reverse sweep found deep point, then dismissing KL Rahul for a golden duck as Rahul slogged to long-on. Kharote later added Shreyas Iyer, who mistimed to long-on, to complete a four-wicket haul of 4 for 76, while Rashid finished with three wickets.

India’s boundary flow dried up at the death, but they crossed 400 in the final over. The innings ended with Prince Yadav run out for 5, leaving India all out for 402 in 49.5 overs.

Score summary

India 402 (Shubman Gill 154, Ishan Kishan 125; Nangeyalia Kharote 4-76, Rashid Khan 3-48) beat Afghanistan 232 (Rahmat Shah 79, Rahmanullah Gurbaz 41; Arshdeep Singh 3-45, Gurnoor Brar 3-60) by 170 runs.

Afghanistan never threaten chase as India’s seamers finish the job

Gill did not take the field in the second innings, with Shreyas Iyer leading India. Afghanistan began with early aggression through Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who took on Prince Yadav and then hit Arshdeep for a six and a four. Prince nearly had his maiden ODI wicket when Gurbaz top-edged a bouncer to mid-on, but the delivery was a no-ball due to an overstep.

Gurnoor Brar soon made the breakthrough, removing Gurbaz with a back-of-a-length ball clocked at 147.7 kph that was edged to Rahul. Afghanistan reached 62 for 1 after ten overs, but the chase was already drifting as dot balls mounted and the required rate climbed.

Arshdeep bounced out Ibrahim Zadran, with Prince taking a running catch from deep fine leg. Sediqullah Atal and Rahmat Shah added 57 for the third wicket from 60 balls, but even as Atal found boundaries and advanced down the track, the required rate had already touched ten an over. Washington Sundar then trapped Atal lbw.

Darwish Rasooli, on debut, was sent out despite having been stretchered off earlier. He managed a four while clearly in pain, but retired hurt again and did not return. Hashmatullah Shahidi briefly started with a boundary but was dismissed next ball by Gurnoor, who disturbed his off bail.

Rahmat reached his fifty from 52 balls, yet Afghanistan’s innings never shifted into a higher gear. Prince claimed his maiden ODI wicket by flattening Kharote’s off stump, while Arshdeep removed Rashid and Ghazanfar as wickets continued to fall. The innings ended with Rahmat, the last man out, caught at deep fine leg as the Arshdeep-Gurnoor combination completed the job.

The contrast between the sides was stark: India faced 110 dot balls and hit 45 fours and 12 sixes, while Afghanistan faced 148 dots and managed 29 fours and two sixes. With the 170-run win, India sealed the series at 2-0 with one ODI still to play.
