Morocco made a fast start count as Ismael Saibari’s second-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory over Scotland in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at Boston Stadium on Friday 19 June.
Saibari’s early strike not only settled the match, it also set a tournament marker: it was the fastest goal so far at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and Morocco’s fastest-ever World Cup goal. The result leaves Morocco on four points and top of Group C ahead of Brazil’s game in Philadelphia.
Saibari’s record-breaking opener decides it
Morocco’s decisive moment arrived almost immediately. Saibari ran beyond the Scottish back line, controlled a well-weighted ball from Brahim Diaz, and then slammed his finish past Angus Gunn and into the roof of the net for 1-0.
Scotland had to respond to the early setback, and their coach Steve Clarke later acknowledged the impact of conceding so quickly. He said his side took time to settle after Morocco’s opener, but felt they recovered within the first half and began moving the ball better as the game went on.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, meanwhile, pointed to his team’s patience against Scotland’s defensive approach, saying Morocco were able to create chances despite facing what he described as a “very, very low block.”
Morocco threaten again after the break
After half-time, the match continued with back-and-forth momentum, and Morocco went close to extending their lead. Saibari nearly struck again when a deflected effort came back off the bar following a move down the left from Bilal El Khannouss, who delivered a low cross into the area.
Morocco then threatened from a set piece as El Khannouss almost flicked home a near-post corner from Achraf Hakimi, but Gunn denied him to keep Scotland within a goal.
Scotland push late but Morocco hold on
Scotland’s best spell came in the final 15 minutes as they gained the ascendancy and attacked in waves in search of an equaliser. John McGinn, Ben Gannon-Doak and Scott McTominay were among those driving Scotland forward as time ticked down.
However, Morocco held firm to see out a crucial victory. Bounou said that when Scotland pushed more in the closing stages, Morocco “stepped back” effectively and managed the final minutes to preserve the 1-0 scoreline.
Key stat and Player of the Match
The match also added a notable milestone for Saibari. FIFA’s key stat noted that he became just the second African player to score in each of his first two appearances at the World Cup, after Egypt’s Mohamed Salah in 2018 (against Russia and Saudi Arabia).
Saibari’s impact was recognised with the Superior Player of the Match award, capping a performance defined by his early, decisive finish and later near-misses as Morocco stayed perfect defensively to edge Scotland in Boston.
