The USA moved into the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 with a game to spare after a controlled 2-0 Group D victory over Australia at Seattle Stadium on Friday 19 June. An early own goal and a first-half finish from Alex Freeman were enough for the co-hosts to claim a second straight win and continue an impressive start to the tournament.
The result also carried added significance for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who had not won back-to-back World Cup matches since the start of the inaugural edition in 1930. This time, the USA made it two wins from two in high-energy fashion, and did so without Christian Pulisic, who was ruled out with a calf injury.
How the USA built a two-goal lead before the break
The USA set the tone early by pressing high and overwhelming Tony Popovic’s Australia, with FIFA noting the hosts were “as bright as the Seattle sunshine”. The opening goal arrived in the 11th minute and, for the second game running, came via an own goal.
Folarin Balogun sparked the move with a surge into the box from the left and delivered a low cross that Cameron Burgess turned into his own net, putting the USA 1-0 up. The strike continued a notable trend for the co-hosts in this tournament, with the match report highlighting that the USA became the first team to benefit from an own goal in consecutive World Cup games.
The second goal came just before half-time, again from a sequence driven by USA attacking intent. A deflection sent Sergino Dest’s shot from the edge of the box looping towards goal. As the ball dropped inside the six-yard box, Freeman got his head to it ahead of goalkeeper Patrick Beach to nod in and make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute.
Balogun had a chance to extend the lead further, but Alessandro Circati produced a vital block to keep Australia within reach. Still, the USA’s two first-half goals proved decisive, with the match report describing them as “more than enough” for the co-hosts to see out a comfortable win.
Player of the Match and key talking points
Balogun was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match after playing a central role in the opening goal and leading the USA’s attacking threat. Pochettino praised his team’s first-half performance, calling it “a fantastic game” and saying the USA “dominated the game.” He also pointed to the importance of the wider squad with Pulisic unavailable, adding: “It was impossible for Christian [Pulisic] to play but if we want to win the competition, we need the whole team.”
Australia coach Tony Popovic felt his side were second best early, saying they looked “sluggish” and “heavy-legged” as the USA were “quicker” and “more powerful,” and he described the two goals conceded as “two soft goals.” However, he also highlighted a strong response after the interval, calling the second-half reaction “outstanding” given the circumstances of playing the host nation.
Balogun said the USA’s fast start was key, noting: “We wanted to start fast like we did against Paraguay and it made the game so much easier.” He also singled out Freeman after his headed goal, adding: “I’m so happy for Alex Freeman – he’s so humble and down to earth – to get his first World Cup goal.”
What the result means in Group D
With the 2-0 win, the USA secured qualification to the Round of 32 with a game to spare and are guaranteed a place as one of the best third-placed teams. The victory also delivered a notable defensive milestone, as the match report stated the USA earned their first clean sheet in ten matches.
For Australia, the defeat leaves them with work still to do in Group D, while the USA can now look to build on momentum and manage the final group match with their knockout place already assured.
