Bosnia and Herzegovina strengthened their FIFA World Cup 2026™ knockout hopes with a 3-1 win over Qatar at Seattle Stadium on Wednesday 24 June, a result that ultimately confirmed them as one of the best third-place qualifiers and sent them through to the Round of 32.
Teenager Kerim Alajbegovic set the tone with a standout first-half goal, before an own goal and a late strike from substitute Ermin Mahmic completed the scoring. Qatar, who pulled one back through captain Hassan Al-Haydos before the break, exited the tournament at the group stage.
How the match was won
Bosnia and Herzegovina made a dominant start, forcing Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada into action several times in the opening stages as the Europeans applied early pressure.
That pressure told in the 29th minute when 18-year-old Alajbegovic produced a solo goal that put Bosnia and Herzegovina in front. The teenager cut inside, beat two Qatar players and fired a right-footed shot into the top corner to make it 1-0.
The lead doubled five minutes later, with Bosnia and Herzegovina benefiting from an own goal credited to Abunada. Edin Dzeko’s half-volley struck left-back Sultan Al-Brake on the thigh, and the ball then spun in off the goalkeeper to put Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 up in the 34th minute.
Qatar responded to halve the deficit before half-time. Edmilson Junior pulled the ball back from the left for Al-Haydos, who slammed home from close range in the 42nd minute to make it 2-1 and keep Qatar in contention heading into the interval.
After the break, Qatar pushed for an equaliser. Head coach Julen Lopetegui introduced Almoez Ali, described as the country’s all-time record scorer, midway through the second half as Qatar looked for a way back into the match.
However, Bosnia and Herzegovina restored their two-goal cushion late on. Substitute Ermin Mahmic scored in the 82nd minute, his deflected shot finding its way into the net to seal a 3-1 victory and underline Bosnia and Herzegovina’s control of the decisive moments.
The win ensured Sergej Barbarez’s side finished third in Group B behind section winners Switzerland and Canada. In the hours after the match, Bosnia and Herzegovina were confirmed as one of the best third-place qualifiers, meaning they move on to the Round of 32.

What it means for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar
The result carried immediate knockout significance. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 3-1 win not only secured third place in Group B, but also kept their World Cup campaign alive as they advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-place teams.
For Qatar, the defeat confirmed their exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at the group stage despite the lifeline provided by Al-Haydos’ first-half finish.
A notable historical footnote accompanied the win: Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only previous World Cup victory came against IR Iran at Brazil 2014, and that match also arrived on Matchday 3 and also ended 3-1.
After the match, Bosnia and Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez reflected on the achievement, saying: “We wanted to make history, but we didn’t know we’d get this so far. It goes without saying that we always aim to do our best, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far. I’ve received so many messages from people in Bosnia – it’s wonderful. It’ll be brilliant to celebrate with the fans when we get back. We’ll realise it very soon – there are no words to describe how happy I am right now.”
