England were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday 23 June, a result that leaves both sides level on four points after two matches in Group L at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Ghana delivered what FIFA described as an “inspired defensive display” to withstand sustained England pressure, while still carrying a threat on the break. The stalemate means England and Ghana will go into the final matchday on 27 June occupying the top two places in the group, with qualification still to be confirmed.

The match also continued a familiar pattern for England at recent tournaments. A key stat noted that England have now drawn one of their group matches 0-0 in four of the previous five tournaments, with goalless group draws also coming against Algeria at South Africa 2010, Costa Rica at Brazil 2014 and the USA at Qatar 2022.

How England and Ghana shared a goalless draw

The first half was described as being “punctuated by perspiration rather than inspiration,” with England largely on the front foot but struggling to turn territory into clear chances. Ghana “stood tall against wave after wave of England pressure,” and England’s best opening-period opportunity came from Declan Rice, whose looping header cleared the crossbar.

England began to find more moments after the break. Elliot Anderson had a close-range header blocked, and Anthony Gordon then tested Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare with an effort that went into the midriff. Harry Kane followed with a low drive, but Asare was again equal to it as Ghana’s defensive resilience continued to hold.

While England pushed, Ghana also showed they could be dangerous when they broke forward. With just under ten minutes remaining, Ghana “sliced England open” when Abdul Fatawu was sent through on Jordan Pickford. Ezri Konsa recovered to foil the initial attempt, and the follow-up was blocked just in front of the goalline by Ghana team-mate Antoine Semenyo, a dramatic moment that preserved the deadlock.

England’s best spell came late. In the 87th minute, a flowing move ended with Reece James crossing for Nico O’Reilly at the back post. O’Reilly’s header came back off the crossbar, and the loose ball fell to Kane, who blazed his effort high, letting Ghana escape with the point.

Jude Bellingham was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match for England.

What the result means for Group L

The draw keeps England and Ghana in the top two positions in Group L after two games each. England sit first with four points and Ghana are second with four points. Croatia are third with three points, while Panama remain fourth with zero points.

Both teams now head into the final round of group matches on 27 June with a clear route to the Round of 32. According to the match report, a point from their final matches—England against Panama and Ghana against Croatia—will secure both teams a place in the knockout phase.

With the margins so fine, the goalless draw in Boston Stadium ensures the group remains poised heading into the decisive final matchday, with England and Ghana still in control of their own qualification prospects.
