Switzerland secured first place in Group B at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ with a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada at BC Place Vancouver on Wednesday 24 June, as Juan Vargas and Johan Manzambi struck after the break before Promise David’s late reply set up a tense finish.

The result sent both teams into the knockout phase, with Switzerland’s win ensuring Murat Yakin’s side return to BC Place Vancouver on 2 July for a Round of 32 tie against a third-placed team from Group E, F, G, I or J. Canada, meanwhile, advanced as runners-up and will travel to Los Angeles to face the Group A runners-up on 28 June.

Second-half surge seals Swiss top spot in Group B

Switzerland showed early intent and created the first clear opening after 11 minutes. Released by Ricardo Rodriguez, Breel Embolo went through on goal but was denied by Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. The danger was not over, with Derek Cornelius then blocking Manzambi’s follow-up attempt.

Canada’s best first-half moments came through low efforts from Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed, but neither attempt troubled Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel significantly as the match remained scoreless at the interval.

That changed almost immediately after the restart. Just 40 seconds into the second half, Switzerland seized control when Vargas arrived at the back post to finish emphatically into the bottom corner. The move was created by Manzambi, whose low cross from the right set up the opener.

Switzerland doubled their advantage in the 57th minute, with Manzambi continuing his strong tournament by driving a low shot under Crepeau. The goal was his third of the finals, underlining his impact in a match that ultimately earned him the Superior Player of the Match award.

Canada responded with the determination that has carried them into the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Substitute Promise David made an instant impact, stabbing in a volley with his first touch just two minutes after coming on in the 74th minute.

The goal sparked a late push from the co-hosts as they pressed for an equaliser. David went close again with a header, but Kobel’s save helped Switzerland see out the win and confirm top spot in the group.

What the result means for Switzerland and Canada

Switzerland’s victory in Vancouver ensured they finished first in Group B and will remain at BC Place Vancouver for their Round of 32 match on 2 July, where they will face a third-placed team from Group E, F, G, I or J.

Canada’s defeat dropped them to second in Group B, but their place in the knockout phase was already secured. They now head to Los Angeles for a Round of 32 meeting with the Group A runners-up on 28 June.

After the match, Canada coach Jesse Marsch pointed to his team’s response and focus on the knockout phase, saying: “We’re exactly where we wanted to be – in the knockout phase.” Switzerland midfielder Michel Aebischer highlighted the team’s confidence after their group-stage run, while Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on staying in Vancouver but looked ahead to the challenge of playing on the road.

For Switzerland, the combination of Vargas’ early second-half finish and Manzambi’s decisive contribution proved enough to edge a Canada side that rallied late, setting up two Round of 32 paths that now take the teams in different directions despite both moving on.
