Jon Rahm Confirms Irish Open Return for Doonbeg in September

Jon Rahm will return to the Amgen Irish Open in September at Doonbeg as he targets more DP World Tour starts to stay Ryder Cup eligible

Jon Rahm has confirmed he will play the Amgen Irish Open in September, adding another DP World Tour start to his schedule as he looks to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup. The Spaniard will tee it up at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg from September 10-13 in what is being billed as a strong field that also includes Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

Rahm’s commitment follows an agreement reached in May, in which he paid outstanding fines related to playing on LIV Golf and agreed to appear in several tournaments this year. The Genesis Scottish Open is listed as one of those events, and the Irish Open is now another key addition.

Rahm is a two-time winner of the Irish Open and has repeatedly pointed to the tournament as one he missed playing since joining LIV, while also identifying it as a target when needing to play a minimum number of DP World Tour events to satisfy Ryder Cup qualifying criteria.

Rahm: Irish Open wins “mean a lot” as he targets a third title

Rahm said he is eager to return to Ireland for the event, which he has won twice and has described as a tournament he enjoys.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open,” said Rahm. “Winning this tournament twice means a lot to me and it’s always a place I enjoy playing. The courses, the fans and the challenge of links golf make it a special week.”

Rahm’s first Irish Open title came at Portstewart in 2017, which was also the first of his 10 DP World Tour titles. He followed that with another Irish Open victory at Lahinch in 2019. Now 31, he will attempt to claim a third Irish Open crown when the tournament heads to Doonbeg in September.

The event’s line-up is set to be headlined by McIlroy, with the field also featuring Lowry, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, and Rahm’s Legion XIII teammate Tyrell Hatton. Rahm’s presence is a notable boost for the Irish Open, particularly with the Ryder Cup returning to Ireland the following year at Adare Manor.

From Rahm’s perspective, the Irish Open is also another opportunity to add DP World Tour starts amid a continuing situation involving LIV Golf that the report notes is showing no signs of a quick solution.

Rahm is also planning additional DP World Tour appearances, with the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the Spanish Open, and the Dunhill Links mentioned as tournaments on his schedule. However, the report adds that the expected arrival of his fourth child in the autumn could lead to him missing one of those events.

Why Rahm’s Doonbeg commitment matters for the Irish Open field

Rahm’s decision to commit to the Amgen Irish Open strengthens the tournament’s September line-up and adds another marquee name alongside McIlroy and Lowry. It also underlines how the Irish Open is factoring into Rahm’s plans as he seeks to meet DP World Tour event requirements connected to Ryder Cup eligibility.

With Rahm chasing a third Irish Open title at Doonbeg—after wins at Portstewart and Lahinch—his return provides a clear storyline for the week, while the presence of multiple high-profile players sets the stage for a standout edition of the tournament.
