Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis Season 7 and U Mumba TT in Table Tennis action

Reigning champions U Mumba TT secured their first victory of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 powered by ChatGPT with a dramatic 8-7 win over previously unbeaten Dabang Delhi TTC at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. The tie was decided in a tense Golden Point finish, with Anusha Kutumbale delivering the decisive moment to finally get U Mumba on the board this season.

The contest swung repeatedly and ultimately came down to the final Women’s Singles match, where U Mumba needed just one game to clinch the tie. Delhi’s Maria Xiao, however, forced the showdown all the way to a winner-takes-all decider before Kutumbale held her nerve in the Golden Point to seal the result.

How the tie unfolded: early Delhi edge, U Mumba respond

Dabang Delhi TTC struck first through Youssef Abdelaziz, who defeated U Mumba captain Manush Shah 2-1 (11-9, 11-5, 6-11) to give Delhi the early advantage. The opening match set the tone for a close tie, with Shah salvaging a game but Abdelaziz doing enough across the first two to secure the win.

U Mumba hit back in the next match as Anna Hursey produced another statement performance, coming from behind to beat Sutirtha Mukherjee 2-1 (11-9, 7-11, 6-11). The result handed Mukherjee her first game defeat of the campaign and also her first match defeat, keeping U Mumba within touching distance after the early setback.

The momentum continued to shift in the mixed doubles, where Hursey and Shah combined to beat Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Maria Xiao 2-1 (4-11, 11-6, 8-11). The win was significant in the context of Delhi’s season form, as it ended the previously unbeaten pairing’s seven-match winning streak stretching across Seasons 6 and 7.

U Mumba then tightened their grip through Lilian Bardet, who overcame Sathiyan in another closely fought three-game battle, winning 2-1 (10-11, 11-8, 8-11). The match again underlined how narrow the margins were across the tie, with Bardet doing enough in the decider to add further pressure on Delhi heading into the final contest.

Final match drama: Xiao forces 7-7 before Golden Point finish

With the tie on the line, the final Women’s Singles provided the decisive drama. Kutumbale entered the match needing only one game to secure victory for U Mumba, but Xiao refused to go quietly. According to the match narrative, Xiao saved four tie points to steal the opening game and then took the second to level the tie at 7-7.

That set up a winner-takes-all decider, and the tie ultimately hinged on a tense Golden Point finish. Kutumbale held her nerve in the decisive moment to clinch U Mumba’s first victory of Season 7, completing the 8-7 comeback against a Delhi side that had been unbeaten until this tie.

In the official match listing, Xiao is recorded as winning the Women’s Singles 2-1 (11-10, 11-9, 10-11), reflecting how close the final contest was across all three games and how the outcome came down to the finest of margins.
