Dabang Delhi TTC boosted their Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 campaign on Monday, beating Ahmedabad APL Pipers 9-6 at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Captain Sathiyan Gnanasekaran anchored the former champions with crucial victories in the Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles, helping Delhi secure their third win of the season and strengthen their playoff hopes.
The tie featured early momentum swings and multiple Golden Point finishes before Delhi seized control through Sathiyan’s contributions. Ahmedabad still found late resistance through their captain Manika Batra, but Delhi had already built enough of a cushion to close out the 9-6 result.
Golden Points, a mixed doubles swing, and Sathiyan’s statement win
Delhi struck first in the opening exchanges when Youssef Abdelaziz edged Adrien Rassenfosse in a tight three-game contest. The match went all the way to Golden Point, where Abdelaziz sealed the win to give Delhi the early advantage.
Ahmedabad responded immediately through their foreign ace Sofia Polcanova, who continued her strong Season 7 run by defeating Maria Xiao—also on Golden Point. That result restored parity and underlined how finely balanced the tie was in its early stages, with both sides trading blows and neither able to establish sustained control.
The key shift came in the mixed doubles. With the tie still delicately poised, Sathiyan teamed up with Xiao to return to winning ways, defeating the Ahmedabad pairing of Payas and Polcanova. The result reclaimed the initiative for Delhi and set the platform for their captain to take over the contest.
From there, Sathiyan delivered the defining performance of the night in the Men’s Singles. The report noted that he had been on the wrong side of recent meetings against Payas, but this time the Delhi skipper responded emphatically, producing a commanding straight-games victory. That win put Delhi “in complete control” of the tie and laid the foundation for the eventual 9-6 finish.
Ahmedabad did have a final highlight as skipper Manika Batra closed the evening with an impressive singles win over Sutirtha Mukherjee. However, despite that late success, Delhi’s earlier work—particularly through Sathiyan’s mixed doubles and singles contributions—meant the former champions had already done enough to secure the overall victory.
Awards and UTT Season 7 context
Sathiyan’s influence on the tie was reflected in the post-match honours. He was named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player and also took the Indian Player of the Tie award. Polcanova, despite being on the losing side, was recognised as the Foreign Player of the Tie and also received the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour.
The match formed part of Butterfly UTT Season 7, staged under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani. The league features 42 players from around the world, including 14 Olympians, and continues to position itself as a key platform for elite competition and year-round development initiatives within the Indian table tennis ecosystem.
