Egypt claimed a long-awaited first FIFA World Cup victory as they came from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in Group G at BC Place Vancouver on Sunday 21 June.

After trailing to Finn Surman’s early header, Egypt turned the match around in the second half through goals from Mostafa Zico, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet. The result marked a historic moment for Egypt, who earned their first World Cup win since making their debut 92 years and 25 days ago.

New Zealand started on the front foot and looked the sharper side early on, but Egypt’s response after the break proved decisive, with Salah also named Superior Player of the Match.

How Egypt flipped the game after Surman’s opener

New Zealand set the tone with an aggressive opening spell at BC Place Vancouver. Sarpreet Singh and Elijah Just both threatened as the All Whites pushed for an early breakthrough, and it arrived in the 15th minute when Finn Surman powered in a “bullet” header from a corner to put New Zealand 1-0 up.

Egypt sought a route back before half-time. Salah and Emam Ashour both went close as Egypt pressed for an equaliser, but New Zealand carried their advantage into the interval.

Egypt came out with renewed intent after the restart. Salah was denied by Max Crocombe in the first minute of the second half, a moment that underlined Egypt’s urgency. At the other end, Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir kept his side in the contest with a terrific save from Callum McCowatt’s flicked header shortly afterwards, preventing New Zealand from doubling their lead.

That save proved pivotal as Egypt levelled in the 58th minute. Mostafa Zico pulled Hossam Hassan’s side back into the game with a free header, making it 1-1 and shifting the momentum.

Nine minutes later, Salah delivered the decisive goal. After a fine team move, he guided a crisp low finish into the net in the 67th minute to complete the turnaround and put Egypt 2-1 ahead.

With New Zealand chasing an equaliser, Egypt added a third late on. Trezeguet struck with eight minutes remaining, scoring in the 82nd minute to seal a 3-1 win and spark celebrations as Egypt closed out a landmark result.

This was the first time Egypt had ever gone in behind at half-time in a FIFA World Cup fixture.

What they said and what comes next in Group G

Salah, Egypt’s captain, described the win as a major achievement and spoke about the hope of carrying the momentum through the group. “It’s incredible. I don’t know how to express it in words. It’s a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can carry on like this in the group, and we can write history and qualify – and in years to come it will be remembered as one the best achievements in the history [of Egyptian football]. We have to enjoy today, enjoy tomorrow, then focus on the next game,” he said.

Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir also reflected on the significance of the breakthrough. “Getting the first win for our country, it’s just something…..I don’t know, I don’t have the words. I’m speechless, you know, it’s truly something great. We’re so happy to have achieved this. It’s the first one for Egypt in our history and, Inshallah, it’s not the last one,” Shobeir said.

New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley pointed to a strong first half but acknowledged the shift after the break. “It’s disappointing. We were so good in the first half. We dominated possession and created a lot of chances. We came out in the second half and I thought we were okay but we didn’t quite get to the pace of the game. Egypt upped the tempo and we couldn’t replicate what we were doing so well in the first half. Ultimately, that hurt us. We’re still one game away from making history. We know we have to beat Belgium now,” Bazeley said.

For Egypt, the comeback win not only delivered three points in Group G, but also ended a decades-long wait for a first World Cup victory, with Salah’s decisive strike and late Trezeguet finish ensuring the turnaround was complete.
