India scripted a landmark moment in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Day 7, sealing a historic one-two finish in the men’s 100m T47 final. Dilip Mahadu Gavit powered to gold, while Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath followed him home for silver, giving India two podium places in the same sprint final.
Gavit’s win carried extra significance as it came in Commonwealth Games record time. He clocked 10.71 seconds—also noted as a season-best—to take the top spot, with Basil timing 10.83 seconds to secure second place and complete the Indian 1-2.
Men’s 100m T47 final: Record run and a tight battle for medals
Gavit delivered a decisive finish to clinch gold in the men’s T47 100m, producing what was described as a blistering close over the final 30 metres. His 10.71s effort set a Commonwealth Games record and underlined the strength of India’s showing in the para athletics sprint event.
Basil’s silver was equally hard-earned. His time of 10.83s was enough to edge England’s Kevin Santos, who finished third in 10.85s to take bronze. With the top two spots secured by Indian sprinters, the result marked a rare and memorable one-two on the track for India at the Commonwealth Games.
The finish also added to India’s medal momentum in Glasgow. The one-two in the T47 100m was highlighted as a dominant display, bringing two more medals to the country’s growing tally at the Games.
India’s Day 7 medal haul grows
Gavit’s gold and Basil’s silver were part of a productive Day 7 for India. The report noted that these were India’s second gold and third medals of the day, after long jumper Murali Sreeshankar had earlier opened the day’s account with a silver in the men’s long jump.
In the men’s long jump, Sreeshankar recorded a best leap of 8.09m to claim silver. Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle won gold with 8.15m, while Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie took bronze with 8.08m. Another Indian athlete, Lokesh, finished fifth with a best effort of 7.97m on his Commonwealth Games debut.
Sreeshankar’s silver carried its own historical note: it made him the first Indian men’s long jumper to win two Commonwealth Games medals. He had also won silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
