South Korea Triumphs Over Czech Republic in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener

South Korea made a strong start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign by defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 on Thursday. The match, held in a less-than-packed Guadalajara stadium, saw South Korea finally capitalize on their numerous opportunities, much to the delight of their fans.

The game began with Son Heung-min’s team dominating the first half. The former Tottenham star was at the forefront, blasting one effort over the bar and making dynamic runs that left two Czech defenders in his wake, yet he narrowly missed the target.

The second half brought even more drama and excitement. Despite the overwhelming control by the Koreans, it was the Czech team that first broke the deadlock. Ladislav Krejci’s powerful header found the back of the net, leaving South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu helpless.

However, South Korea’s persistence paid off when Hwang In-beom finally equalized. With a deceptive move, he faked a shot before delicately lifting the ball over Czech goalkeeper Matek Kovar in the 67th minute.

The Czechs managed to score again, but their goal was disallowed, keeping the score tied. Hwang continued his impressive performance by setting up Oh Hyeon-gyu, whose decisive goal in the final minutes brought an exhilarating end to the game. When the final whistle blew, the relief and joy were palpable as Son Heung-min sank to the turf in celebration.

The victory sets a promising tone for South Korea, who will face co-hosts Mexico on June 18th, following Mexico’s victory over South Africa. Meanwhile, the Czech team will face South Africa in Atlanta on the same day, aiming to recover from this narrow loss.
