Mitch Bratt Earns First MLB Win as Diamondbacks Rout Padres

Mitch Bratt earned his first major league victory with seven dominant innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 10-4 on Wednesday night in Phoenix. The left-hander struck out nine, allowed one hit and set career highs for innings pitched, strikeouts and fewest hits allowed in his sixth MLB start.

Bratt improved to 1-1 after holding San Diego in check for seven innings, giving Arizona the foundation for a decisive victory. The 23-year-old Canadian had made all six of his major league starts this season, and his performance gave the Diamondbacks a standout effort as they continued a strong recent run.

Arizona has won 16 of its last 23 games and holds the second National League wild-card spot. The 10-run output, paired with Bratt’s first win, helped the Diamondbacks build further momentum in the race for a postseason position.

Arizona breaks the game open in the fourth

The Diamondbacks took control with scoring in the third inning. Gabriel Moreno opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and Tim Tawa followed four pitches later by hitting a 414-foot home run to left-center. It was Tawa’s sixth homer of the season.

Arizona then produced a six-run fourth inning against San Diego starter Casey Mize. Lars Nootbaar, acquired at the trade deadline, collected his first hit and RBI as a Diamondback to start the rally. Corbin Carroll added an RBI single, while Moreno drew a bases-loaded walk that ended Mize’s outing.

Tawa added a sacrifice fly during the inning, and Ildemaro Vargas doubled to bring home two more runs before the Padres escaped the frame. The sustained sequence turned Arizona’s early advantage into a commanding lead and left San Diego facing a large deficit against a pitcher who had allowed just one hit.

Mize took the loss to fall to 4-7. He was charged with eight runs on nine hits in his outing, walking three and striking out one.

Vargas finishes a big night as Padres score late

Vargas drove in four runs for Arizona, supplying another key hit in the eighth inning. His two-run triple extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 10 runs and capped the club’s scoring.

The Padres mounted a late push in the ninth. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo home run, and Gage Workman followed with a three-run double. Kevin Ginkel allowed two hits and two walks before Paul Sewald entered to record the final out.

Those late runs did not alter the result, with Arizona closing out a 10-4 win behind Bratt’s seven-inning start and contributions throughout the lineup. Moreno, Tawa, Nootbaar, Carroll and Vargas all figured in the Diamondbacks’ scoring, while Bratt’s nine strikeouts marked the defining performance of the night.

The teams were scheduled to conclude the series Thursday, with San Diego right-hander Walker Buehler set to face Arizona left-hander Kohl Drake.
