Shubman Gill Misses Sri Lanka XI Warm-Up Day 1 With Finger Injury

India captain Shubman Gill did not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI after sustaining an impact injury to his right ring finger during practice. The team management took the precautionary decision ahead of India’s first Test against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle.

KL Rahul led India in Gill’s absence and came out for the toss. Sri Lanka XI won the toss and chose to bat in the reduced three-day warm-up fixture.

The update puts the immediate focus on Gill’s recovery as India use the match to prepare for a two-Test series. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring the captain’s progress, while the board described his absence from the opening day as a precautionary measure.

BCCI confirms precautionary absence for India captain

The BCCI said Gill suffered the injury during India’s practice on Thursday. Its update stated that the captain had sustained an impact injury to the right ring finger and would not take the field on the first day of the game against SLC XI.

The board also confirmed that Rahul would lead the side while Gill was unavailable. No further detail on Gill’s participation beyond Day 1 was provided in the update, with his progress remaining under observation by the medical team.

India’s warm-up game had originally been scheduled as a four-day contest but was reduced to three days. That leaves a compact preparation period before the Test series starts, making each day of the fixture significant for the touring side.

Gill’s absence came as India began a key phase of preparation after last playing Test cricket in June. The match against Sri Lanka XI is an opportunity for the squad to acclimatise before the first Test in Galle, where the conditions are described as mainly spin-friendly.

Rahul’s role on Day 1 therefore extended beyond his place in the batting group, as he assumed the captaincy for the opening day and represented India at the toss. Sri Lanka XI’s decision to bat first set the initial direction of the warm-up contest.

Warm-up carries added value before Galle Test

The Sri Lanka tour is an important one for India in the World Test Championship. India are currently fifth in the World Test Championship table and need a strong performance in the upcoming series to improve their prospects of reaching the final.

The squad is already without Jasprit Bumrah, who is unavailable because of a knee injury. His absence has resulted in a maiden Test call-up for Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi. Off-spin bowling all-rounder Saransh Jain is also part of the group, with the selection aimed at addressing Sri Lanka’s left-handed-heavy lineup.

Elsewhere in the setup, Sai Sudharsan is making steady progress from a niggle at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The warm-up fixture also marks the beginning of Subhadeep Ghosh’s stint as fielding coach after the BCCI did not extend the contracts of predecessor T Dilip and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.

For now, Gill’s right ring finger is the central concern from the opening day. India have made clear that the decision to keep him off the field was precautionary, while Rahul takes charge during his absence and the medical team continues to assess the captain before the Test series begins.
