Assam CM Praises Jaanmoni Konwar After National Games Gold

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has congratulated young karate player Jaanmoni Konwar after her gold-medal success at the National Games, describing the achievement as a reflection of the sporting talent across Upper Assam.

Sarma used Konwar’s accomplishment to underline the potential he sees in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. The Chief Minister said the region has produced talent not only in sport, but also in education and culture, and stressed that support for emerging athletes would continue.

Speaking about Konwar’s gold medal, Sarma said there was considerable talent in the four Upper Assam districts. “We have a lot of talent, particularly in these four districts. Be it education, sports, or culture, we have a lot of talent from these areas,” he said.

The Chief Minister also referred to other sportspersons from the region while discussing Konwar’s achievement. He named Lovlina Borgohain, Nayanmoni Saikia and Priyogeswar Boro as athletes who have emerged from these areas.

“As I told you, we are discussing Jaanmoni, but even Lovlina, Nayanmoni, and Priyogeswar Boro, everybody is from these areas. So that is a huge catchment area for talent, and we will continue to support it,” Sarma said.

The comments place Konwar’s achievement within a broader focus on athlete development in Upper Assam. Rather than treating the gold medal as an isolated result, Sarma pointed to the region’s record of producing sportspersons and its capacity to develop more young competitors in the future.
