India Withdraw From FIFA ASEAN Cup for Brazil Friendly

India have withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup in order to prioritise their international friendly against Brazil in October, according to All India Football Federation deputy secretary general M Satyanarayanan. The decision removes India from a new FIFA-sanctioned competition and clears the way for preparations around the Brazil match in Kolkata.

India had been due to take part in the FIFA ASEAN Cup during the September 21 to October 6 international window. But the national team’s commitment to face five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium created a scheduling conflict that the AIFF has now resolved by pulling out of the tournament.

Brazil fixture takes priority over ASEAN Cup campaign

“We have pulled out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup since we can’t play both Brazil and FIFA ASEAN Cup,” Satyanarayanan told PTI. The Brazil friendly was officially announced last month and has become the central fixture in India’s October international plans.

The inaugural ASEAN Cup was conceived as an international competition involving teams from the ASEAN region. India were invited as one of the non-ASEAN participants, initially accepted FIFA’s invitation and signed the participation agreement earlier this year.

Following the draw, India were placed in Division 1 Group A alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Withdrawal means India will not face those Southeast Asian opponents in the new competition, despite having initially committed to the event.

The federation had explored whether it could enter a separate or developmental squad in the ASEAN Cup while the senior side prepared for Brazil. That option will not be pursued, with the AIFF instead choosing to withdraw altogether and use the international window for friendlies.

The decision is significant because India have sought more regular high-level international opposition in recent years. India also failed to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, adding importance to the scheduling of meaningful matches during FIFA windows.

For now, the confirmed October highlight is the Brazil friendly in Kolkata. The fixture gives India a major international occasion, while the withdrawal ends their involvement in the first edition of the ASEAN Cup before the competition begins.

Further friendly discussions remain unconfirmed

Reports on Thursday indicated that India are also exploring friendlies against teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cabo Verde and Iran among the sides being discussed. Those matches have not been officially confirmed by the AIFF.

As a result, the federation’s immediate position is clear: India will not participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, and the Brazil match on October 3 remains the confirmed focus of the October window. Any additional fixtures would require official confirmation before being added to the schedule.

The change represents a departure from India’s earlier plans for the ASEAN Cup. Having accepted the invitation and been drawn with Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, India had a defined route into the tournament. The clash with Brazil, however, has led the AIFF to make a single-squad decision rather than divide its resources between two programmes.

India’s withdrawal also narrows the competitive calendar for the window, but it ensures that the Brazil friendly can be approached without the overlap posed by tournament participation. Attention will now turn to the final shape of India’s October programme and whether any of the reported additional friendlies are confirmed.
