FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 and India in Hockey action

England Rally Past India 4-2 in Hockey World Cup Pool D

CategoriesHockey

England came from behind to beat India 4-2 in their FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 Pool D match in Amstelveen on August 17, overturning a 2-1 half-time deficit with three second-half goals. The result leaves India needing a victory over Pakistan in their final pool fixture to guarantee progress to the next round.

Nick Bandurak scored twice for England, with Stuart Rushmere and Henry Croft also on target. India had responded strongly to an early setback through captain Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh, but England regained control after the interval to hand India their first defeat of the tournament following their win against Wales.

India turn the game around before England’s second-half response

India made the more positive early start and had the first shot through Jarmanpreet Singh after work from Dilpreet Singh on the right. England, however, grew into the opening quarter. India were reduced to 10 players temporarily when Sumit received a green card in the 10th minute, although they defended England’s first penalty corner, with Manpreet Singh making an interception.

England opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the first quarter. Stuart Rushmere brought down a long ball from deep and found Bandurak, who finished to give England a 1-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

India hit back quickly after the restart. Harmanpreet converted India’s first penalty corner two minutes into the second quarter, striking an aerial effort into the net to level the score at 1-1. It was Harmanpreet’s third goal of the World Cup.

India then created further opportunities. Abhishek had a major chance defended on the goal line, while England also cleared another Indian penalty corner. The pressure told in the 10th minute of the quarter when Hardik worked the ball from the left and it eventually reached Dilpreet, who tapped in to put India 2-1 ahead.

England had a goal disallowed late in the second quarter after the ball hit Manpreet on the body, but India still carried their lead into half-time. The source reported India had eight shots to England’s three at the break and held an edge in possession.

Rushmere and Croft swing Pool D contest back England’s way

The third quarter changed the direction of the match. Rushmere equalised in the ninth minute with a flick to make it 2-2. England were briefly down to 10 players soon afterward when Zach Wallace was shown a green card, but they continued their recovery.

Croft completed the turnaround in the 13th minute of the third quarter. England had scored twice in four minutes, moving from 2-1 behind to a 3-2 lead heading into the final quarter.

India had an immediate chance to respond at the start of the fourth quarter, winning a penalty corner, but England cleared on the goal line. Abhishek later fired wide as India searched for an equaliser. England also earned a penalty corner that was defended by India, with goalkeeper Suraj Karkera making the save.

India’s task became harder when Nilakanta Sharma received a yellow card in the eighth minute of the final quarter, leaving his side with 10 players for five of the remaining seven minutes. Two minutes later, Bandurak struck his second goal of the match from a penalty-corner drag-flick to establish a two-goal lead.

England saw out the 4-2 victory, while Rushmere was named Player of the Match. For India, the immediate consequence is clear: their August 19 meeting with Pakistan now carries major qualification significance. A win would guarantee a place in the next round, while the source stated that a draw would leave India at risk of elimination and a defeat would end their World Cup campaign.
