Durand Cup and East Bengal in Football action

East Bengal Defence Set for SC Delhi Test in Durand Cup Semi-Final

CategoriesFootball

East Bengal’s defensive resilience will face its biggest Durand Cup examination when the 16-time champions meet SC Delhi in Wednesday’s first semi-final. The Kolkata side enter as favourites in front of their home support, but SC Delhi arrive with the competition’s most productive attack and a forward line led by seven-goal Brazilian Rodriguinho.

The contest presents a clear contrast between two of the tournament’s strongest campaigns. East Bengal have scored 14 goals and conceded only once, while SC Delhi have struck 21 times in four matches and allowed three goals. A place in the final is at stake, with Mohun Bagan Super Giant due to face Northeast United FC in the other semi-final in Shillong on Thursday.

Defensive record meets the leading attack

East Bengal’s only concession came in their opening Group A defeat to Mohun Bagan, a 1-0 result. Since then, they have put together four consecutive clean sheets, underlining the defensive security that has shaped their route to the last four.

That run included an 8-0 win over CISF Protectors and a 5-0 victory against South United FC, before East Bengal edged Indian Army FT 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Their campaign has therefore combined a substantial scoring return with a defence that has consistently prevented opponents from finding a route back into matches.

Head coach Antonio Lopez Habas has built the side around organisation, tactical discipline and compact defending, with quick transitions after possession is regained. Anwar Ali and Sandip Mandi are among the defenders expected to have a key role in containing SC Delhi’s attacking threat.

East Bengal also have options at the other end. Spanish midfielder Dani Ramirez has been an important creative presence, while Mohammed Rashid provides another attacking outlet. PV Vishnu has scored four goals, including a hat-trick against CISF Protectors and the winning header against Indian Army in the quarter-final.

Rashid said the team are motivated by last season’s disappointment. “We still regret missing out on the Durand Cup final last season. However, it’s a brilliant opportunity for us to go a step further and win our first title of the season,” he said.

SC Delhi’s numbers make clear why East Bengal’s back line faces such a demanding assignment. They topped Group C on nine points after beating Jamshedpur FC 2-1, Defenders FC 7-0 and Indian Air Force FT 7-1. In the quarter-finals, they recovered from an early setback to defeat FC Raengdai 5-1.

Rodriguinho has been central to that output. The Brazilian scored five goals against Defenders FC and also found the net during the quarter-final comeback, taking his tournament total to seven. Lalrinliana Hnamte has also made an impact, scoring twice in the comeback win over Jamshedpur. SC Delhi’s scoring record, however, indicates they can create danger from multiple areas rather than relying solely on one player.

A major semi-final opportunity at Salt Lake Stadium

SC Delhi coach Tomasz Tchorz described reaching this stage as a significant achievement for a newly created club, but made clear that his team want to continue their run. “For our club, Sporting Club Delhi, this is a historic achievement because we are a newly created club. This is one of the first semi-finals, or perhaps the first semi-final, for the club. But we want more,” he said.

Tchorz expects a difficult occasion at Salt Lake Stadium, where East Bengal will have sizeable backing. He called it “very beautiful” to play against East Bengal in Kolkata and acknowledged that most of the crowd would support the home team.

The semi-final could also keep alive the prospect of a Kolkata derby in the title match, repeating the 2023 final in which Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 1-0. Before that possibility can be considered, East Bengal must halt a SC Delhi side that has scored seven goals in each of its last two group games and five more in the quarter-finals.

For East Bengal, the task is to preserve the defensive control that has carried them through four straight shutouts. For SC Delhi, it is an opportunity to prove their high-scoring form can break down the tournament’s most resilient remaining opponent.
