BWF World Championships and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in Badminton action

Satwik-Chirag Get World Championships Walkover to Last 16

CategoriesBadminton

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships on Wednesday after receiving a walkover in their opening match. The fifth-seeded Indian men’s doubles pair moved into the round of 16 without taking the court after Scotland’s Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle withdrew at the last moment.

Rankireddy and Shetty had received a first-round bye and were due to meet Dunn and Pringle in the second round. The withdrawal means the Indian pair are through to the last 16, keeping their World Championships campaign moving after an opening-round route that did not require a match.

The pair arrive at the tournament with two World Championships bronze medals already to their name. Their progress to the pre-quarterfinals gives them another opportunity to add to that record at badminton’s global individual championship.

Walkover sends fifth seeds through

The scheduled second-round contest between Rankireddy-Shetty and the Scottish duo did not go ahead. Dunn and Pringle’s withdrawal handed the fifth seeds a walkover and a place in the pre-quarterfinals.

For Rankireddy and Shetty, the progression follows a first-round bye. Their first on-court appearance at this edition of the World Championships will therefore come only if they play in the round of 16.

The result is formally significant even without points being played, as it places the Indian men’s doubles partnership among the remaining pairs in the pre-quarterfinal stage. Their next match details were not included in the available report.

Rankireddy and Shetty’s two previous bronze medals underline their established record at the World Championships. This year’s campaign now continues from the last-16 stage after the late withdrawal of their second-round opponents.

Crasto and Kapila win in straight games

India also had a completed mixed doubles result on Wednesday, with Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila advancing to the pre-quarterfinals. Crasto and Kapila defeated Macau’s Leong Iok Chong and Ng Weng Chi 21-11, 21-11 in their round-of-32 match.

The scoreline showed a clear straight-games victory for Crasto and Kapila, who conceded 11 points in each game. They secured their place in the last 16 with the identical 21-11 margins.

The result adds a second Indian doubles pairing to the pre-quarterfinals on the day. While Rankireddy and Shetty progressed by walkover, Crasto and Kapila earned their advancement through a two-game win over Leong and Ng.

Other Indian players listed as being in action on Wednesday included two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen. The report also listed Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun, along with Unnati Hooda, among the Indian contingent involved on day three of the competition.

Indian pairs reach the last 16

The key outcome for India was the pre-quarterfinal qualification of two pairs across the doubles draws. Rankireddy and Shetty went through after the withdrawal of Dunn and Pringle, while Crasto and Kapila produced a 21-11, 21-11 victory to move forward in mixed doubles.

With the round of 16 reached, both partnerships remain in contention at the BWF World Championships. Rankireddy and Shetty will seek to build on their previous medal-winning history at the event, and Crasto and Kapila will take confidence from their straight-games round-of-32 result.
