Harmanpreet Warns India After 5-3 Win Over Pakistan

CategoriesHockey

India captain Harmanpreet Singh called for greater defensive discipline despite his side’s 5-3 victory over Pakistan in a high-intensity FIH World Cup contest on Wednesday. Harmanpreet scored twice from penalty corners as India extended their decade-long winning run against their rivals, but he said the team must remove avoidable errors before facing stronger opposition in the next round.

The captain’s message after the win was clear: missed opportunities in attack can be tolerated, but mistakes at the back cannot. India created chances and produced a performance that pleased Harmanpreet overall, yet he identified possession losses and a familiar slow start after half-time as issues requiring attention.

Harmanpreet highlights possession and defensive concerns

Harmanpreet said India need to be more secure once they win the ball in advanced areas. He pointed specifically to turnovers after regaining possession around the 25-metre area, describing them as “silly mistakes” that could be avoided.

“Missing a few chances upfront is okay but we cannot afford any mistake at the back,” Harmanpreet said after the match. He added that retaining the ball following a turnover in the attacking half must become a priority as the tournament reaches its more demanding phase.

The India skipper also noted that his side had again been slow to begin the third quarter. According to Harmanpreet, the team had already discussed the need to avoid that pattern after its earlier match, but repeated the issue against Pakistan. He described the experience as an important lesson for India’s next outing.

Harmanpreet nevertheless found plenty to encourage him in the way India approached the contest. He cited the side’s circle entries, possession, chance creation and passing as areas that were up to the required standard. His two penalty-corner goals helped lead India’s scoring effort in the 5-3 result.

Abhishek also scored twice for India and said there was no panic within the squad when Pakistan mounted a comeback. He said the players followed their plan and understood that they could not relax at any stage of the contest.

India take positives into the next round

Head coach Craig Fulton was pleased with the manner in which India handled the significance of the occasion. He said it was a major game and that every player was trying his best, while also praising the team for staying committed to its plan.

Fulton said he was happy with the way India played, an assessment that aligned with Harmanpreet’s view of the side’s attacking work. India’s ability to create opportunities, move the ball and keep pressure on Pakistan provided the positive foundation of the performance.

But Harmanpreet’s post-match warning gives the result added importance beyond the scoreline. India have a win over Pakistan and encouraging attacking contributions from their captain and Abhishek, yet the captain has made clear that possession management and defensive concentration will be central concerns going forward.

Pakistan’s Sufiyan Khan acknowledged that his team’s mistakes had been costly against what he called a very good India side. He said Pakistan would work hard, learn from the defeat and aim to come back stronger at next month’s Asian Games.

For India, the 5-3 success supplies momentum, but Harmanpreet’s focus remains on improvement. The captain wants the side to carry its attacking quality into the next round while cutting out the lapses that could prove more damaging against the tournament’s leading teams.
