India Hold England 0-0 to Reach Women’s Hockey World Cup Round 2

CategoriesHockey

India held England to a tense 0-0 draw in their final Pool D match at the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026, securing a place in the second round. China finished first in the pool on seven points, while India ended second with five after surviving a sustained late England push.

The draw was enough for India, who began the match knowing they needed to avoid defeat to progress. England required a victory to move on, and they created much of the pressure across the contest, particularly through penalty corners. India’s defensive resistance and key saves from Savita Punia and Bichhu Devi ultimately protected the point they needed.

India withstand England’s penalty-corner pressure

The opening quarter ended scoreless after both sides had opportunities. India won an early penalty corner after Ishika found space, but Navneet Kaur’s effort struck an Indian player before entering the net and the goal was disallowed. England then earned a penalty corner of their own, but Jyoti made an important interception and an effort from Owsley went wide.

England were briefly reduced to 10 players when Hamilton received a green card late in the first quarter, but India could not take advantage. The second quarter brought further chances at both ends. Rayer attempted to create an England opening, while Ishika had the ball in a promising position in the opposition half without finding a finish.

Salima Tete’s shot from the left was saved by the England goalkeeper, and Lalremsiami later won another penalty corner for India. Deepika’s effort was stopped, leaving the game level at half-time. India had already shown their ability to create set-piece opportunities, but the match remained without a goal.

India had two consecutive penalty corners in the third quarter, but another potential breakthrough was ruled out. Navneet’s shot was disallowed because it was higher than backboard height. England then took control of territory and began to test India repeatedly through penalty corners.

Savita made a save from the edge of the circle after England won a corner, while England also earned three straight penalty corners during a dangerous phase following Ishika’s green card. India continued to defend, with England unable to turn their attacking volume into the goal that would have changed the qualification picture.

Late Bichhu save seals India’s progress

The final quarter was dominated by England’s search for a winner. England gained another penalty corner after India lost a referral, and later received a further corner following a long review that judged Salima’s foot had made contact with the ball. Bichhu produced a significant save to keep the score at 0-0.

England continued to press into the closing minutes. Lottie Bingham sent a shot wide with five minutes remaining, while another England referral did not produce a goal. In the final minute, Bichhu made another important intervention, diving to her left to deny England with around 30 seconds left.

The final hooter confirmed India’s progress and England’s elimination from the race for the next round. India had earned six penalty corners but did not convert any, while England had 11 penalty corners and also failed to score. The result underlined the importance of India’s defending and goalkeeping in a match they had to avoid losing.

India’s Pool D campaign included a 2-2 draw with China, a 6-1 win over South Africa and the draw against England. They will next face Pool A leaders Netherlands in Round 2 on Friday, according to the match coverage.
