Formula 1 2026 and Dutch Grand Prix in Formula 1 action

Lewis Hamilton Says He Returns Fitter for Dutch GP Push

CategoriesFormula 1

Lewis Hamilton says he has returned from Formula 1’s summer break in the best mid-season physical condition of his career as he prepares to resume his 2026 title pursuit at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver is second in the standings, 50 points behind Mercedes leader Kimi Antonelli, with the first race since July 26 now bringing the championship battle back into focus.

The 41-year-old said he used the break differently from previous championship seasons, prioritising training rather than the kind of social schedule he said drivers would normally have during one or two weeks away from racing. Hamilton described himself as refreshed as he targets an eighth Formula 1 title in the second half of the campaign.

Hamilton returns refreshed after a different break

Hamilton said the time away had been the most different summer break he has experienced during his Formula 1 career. His emphasis was on fitness, and he said the result was a feeling of returning stronger than he had at this point in any of his 20 years in the sport.

“This has been the most different summer break that I’ve ever had in all of my championship seasons in my career in Formula 1,” Hamilton said. “I come back the fittest I’ve ever come back in a summer, in 20 years or whatever that I’ve been here, so I’m pretty proud of that.”

He contrasted feeling refreshed with simply feeling relaxed, saying his preparation had produced a different kind of readiness for the races ahead. “I’ve come in really feeling definitely refreshed. It’s a different sort of feeling, rather than relaxed,” Hamilton said. “It’s a good feeling, feeling fit.”

The timing is important in a season where Hamilton has re-established himself as a title contender. He has already claimed his first victory since 2024 and enters the Dutch Grand Prix with Antonelli leading the standings for Mercedes. Hamilton’s 50-point deficit leaves him with ground to make up, but the restart provides the next opportunity for Ferrari to continue its challenge.

Hamilton’s position also represents a contrast with 2025, when he went into the mid-season break doubting his abilities after a flat campaign. This year, his words ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix reflected confidence in his physical preparation and a clear focus on the title fight still ahead.

Ferrari encouraged as wet-weather challenge looms

Hamilton also offered encouraging words about Ferrari’s direction after the summer pause. He said the team was “going in the right direction” after adopting a more innovative approach to car design in its effort to take the fight to Mercedes.

Mercedes began the season as the runaway leader under Formula 1’s new regulations, but Ferrari’s progress has helped put Hamilton back into contention. The Dutch Grand Prix will be the latest test of that development as the championship resumes.

Conditions could add another element to the weekend. Rain and gusts of wind were expected on Friday and could also affect Saturday’s sprint race. That would present a fresh challenge for drivers, who have not yet had to race the new generation of Formula 1 cars in wet conditions.

For Hamilton, the immediate message before the Dutch Grand Prix is that his preparation has changed and that he believes it has paid off. With Antonelli ahead in the standings and Ferrari seeking further progress, the second half of the season begins with Hamilton refreshed, fit and intent on maintaining his title charge.
