Diamond League 2026 and Lausanne Diamond League in Athletics action

Neeraj Chopra Takes Second at Lausanne With 88.05m Season Best

CategoriesAthletics

Neeraj Chopra finished second in the men’s javelin at the Lausanne Diamond League 2026 after producing a season-best throw of 88.05m, with Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage taking victory by a margin of just 0.09m.

Chopra briefly led the competition after his second-round effort, but Pathirage responded with 88.14m in the third round to reclaim first place. Anderson Peters completed the top three, finishing with a season-best 86.69m on his final throw.

The result marked Chopra’s best distance of the 2026 season in his third competitive appearance after returning from injury. His progress has been clear across his three events, following throws of 85.69m in Doha and 85.83m at the Commonwealth Games before the 88.05m effort in Lausanne.

Chopra and Pathirage trade the lead in Lausanne

Pathirage set the early standard with 85.99m in the opening round. Chopra began strongly as well, reaching 83.54m to move into second, while Peters and Jakub Vadlejch did not cross 80m with their first attempts.

The contest accelerated in the second round. Pathirage extended his lead to 87.06m, and Peters improved to 84.76m to move into second. Chopra then delivered the standout response of the round, throwing 88.05m to move into first place and establish his season best.

That lead did not last beyond the next round. Pathirage improved again, registering 88.14m on his third attempt. The Sri Lankan’s best effort put him back in front by the narrowest of margins, with Chopra recording 83.72m on his third throw.

Neither of the leading two improved their best marks over the final rounds. Chopra fouled his fourth attempt and did not take a fifth attempt. Pathirage’s fourth-round effort of 86.71m fell short of his leading mark, while his fifth attempt was invalid. On his final attempt, Pathirage threw just over 80m but chose to invalidate it.

Chopra had one last chance to move ahead but threw 82.15m in the sixth round, leaving him second behind Pathirage. Peters, meanwhile, improved from 86.61m in round four to 86.69m with his final throw, though that was not enough to dislodge Chopra from second place.

Pathirage extends Diamond League winning run

Pathirage’s Lausanne victory completed a Diamond League hat-trick in 2026 after previous wins in Rome and Doha. According to the event coverage, it was his ninth competitive javelin victory of the year. His 88.14m in Lausanne was enough to hold off Chopra despite the close finish.

For Chopra, second place came with a significant season-best marker and confirmed an upward sequence in distance across his three events this year. The 88.05m throw was the only effort that separated him from victory by less than a tenth of a metre.

The attention now turns to the Asian Games, which begin on September 19. Chopra and Pathirage are set to meet again there, with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem also expected to be part of the wider javelin contest. Lausanne offered a close preview of the challenge ahead, as Pathirage’s 88.14m narrowly surpassed Chopra’s 88.05m in one of the tightest finishes of the Diamond League season.
