Pranesh M Wins Kanizsa Open 2026 Group A Title in Hungary

Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M won the Kanizsa Open 2026 Group A title in Nagykanizsa, Hungary, sealing the championship with a victory over Germany’s Vadim Petrovskiy in the ninth and final round on Sunday.

The 19-year-old played the final-round game with the white pieces and completed the tournament on seven points from nine rounds. Pranesh shared the top spot with three other players, but his result against Petrovskiy secured the Group A title at the Central European open event.

The success adds another international tournament victory for the Karaikudi-born grandmaster, who arrived at the event rated 2673. Pranesh is ranked 44th in the latest FIDE World Rankings for August 2026.

Final-round win seals the Group A crown

Pranesh entered the decisive ninth round with the title still to be settled and delivered the result he needed against Petrovskiy. The win in the final round ensured that his seven-point total was enough to finish at the head of the Group A standings.

The Kanizsa Open is held in Nagykanizsa, Hungary, and the 2026 edition provided Pranesh with nine rounds of competition. His final score of seven points placed him level with three other players at the top, with the closing-round victory proving central to his championship finish.

For Pranesh, the result is notable both for the title itself and for the setting. The event is described as one of Central Europe’s competitive open tournaments, while the victory came against an international field and was completed in the final round rather than before the conclusion of the schedule.

Pranesh, still only 19, has continued to compete from a strong position in the world rankings. His August 2026 FIDE ranking of 44th and rating of 2673 provide context for a title-winning run that ended with a direct win over a German opponent.

Indian Embassy hails Pranesh’s success

The Indian Embassy in Hungary congratulated Pranesh after his triumph and highlighted the significance of the result for Indian chess players competing in the country.

In a post on X, the embassy wrote: “Huge Congratulations! to Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M on his brilliant victory at the prestigious Kanizsa Open 2026 in Nagykanizsa, Hungary!”

The embassy added that, after a “thrilling 9th round”, Pranesh had secured top spot in one of Central Europe’s most competitive open tournaments. It also said it was proud to see Indian talent “shining so brightly on the global stage” and described Hungary as a happy hunting ground for Indian chess.

The Kanizsa Open result leaves Pranesh with a Group A championship, seven points from nine rounds and a final-round victory that decided his tournament. His win in Nagykanizsa is another prominent international result for the Indian grandmaster in 2026.
