Manchester United Complete Carlos Baleba Signing From Brighton

Manchester United have completed the signing of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton, confirming the arrival of the 22-year-old Cameroon international on a five-year contract with an option for a sixth year.

United did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, although British media widely reported a fee of 65 million pounds with a potential further 5 million pounds in add-ons, taking the reported value to 70 million pounds ($95 million). The move adds another midfielder to Michael Carrick’s squad following a summer of change in that area of the team.

Baleba said joining United was an opportunity to represent the club he had dreamed of playing for. “It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honor,” he said in the club’s announcement.

Baleba joins United’s midfield rebuild

The signing comes after the departure of Casemiro and following a serious knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte. United had already strengthened their midfield options last month by bringing in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

Baleba now becomes the latest addition in a rebuild that has reshaped United’s options in the centre of the pitch. His arrival gives the club another player in a position that has been a clear focus during the transfer window, with the previous departures, injury situation and new signings all contributing to a changing midfield group.

United highlighted Baleba’s Premier League output from last season in announcing the transfer. Across 31 league appearances, the club said he ranked in the top 8% of players for combined tackles and interceptions. United also said he was in the top 1% for second balls won.

Those figures were part of the club’s explanation of why Baleba was targeted. Director of football Jason Wilcox described the new signing as an elite midfielder with significant potential still to develop.
