India-Cape Verde Friendly Unlikely Over Commercial Talks

India are unlikely to face Cape Verde in a proposed football friendly during the September-October FIFA international window after the two parties reportedly failed to reach an agreement on commercial terms.

According to a Times Now report cited by NDTV, the All India Football Federation had been looking to arrange the match ahead of India’s scheduled clash with Brazil. However, sources close to the development indicated that the proposed Cape Verde fixture is now highly unlikely to happen.

One source put the chances of the match going ahead at just five per cent, saying: “There is a 5 per cent chance, and I don’t think they will be coming.” The source added that the issue was due to both parties not reaching an agreement “on the commercial side”.

The uncertainty around the Cape Verde proposal matters because India are preparing for a demanding run of international fixtures against opponents who featured at the 2026 World Cup. The proposed match had been considered as part of the team’s preparation before the Brazil game in October.

Panama friendly confirmed for September 26

While the Cape Verde plan appears unlikely, India have confirmed an international friendly against Panama on September 26 during the FIFA men’s international window. The All India Football Federation announced the fixture on Tuesday, with the venue still to be confirmed.

The match will be the first meeting between India and Panama. It will also be only the ninth different CONCACAF opponent India have faced, according to the report.

Panama are ranked 44th in the latest FIFA standings and featured at the 2026 World Cup. The fixture therefore gives India a significant test during the international break, with the team set to meet opponents from the recent World Cup field.

AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan described the Panama match as an important challenge before India’s next scheduled fixture against Brazil. “Playing against Panama will be a tough battle ahead of the Brazil game. Panama are a top-50 team in the world, and it will be a good test for Khalid Jamil’s boys,” he said.

Satyanarayan also said the matches offer players valuable exposure against high-level opponents. “We are looking forward to our players getting the right exposure, and we normally don’t get to play such World Cup teams. So it’s a good FIFA window for us, where we are playing such tough teams,” he added.

India’s upcoming international schedule

The Panama game is currently scheduled to be the first of four matches India will play against nations that appeared at this summer’s World Cup in 2026. India are slated to face Brazil on October 3, followed by two matches against New Zealand on November 12 and November 15.

Those confirmed fixtures mean India’s autumn programme remains substantial even if the Cape Verde friendly does not materialise. Panama will provide the immediate test on September 26, before attention turns to Brazil in early October.

For now, the reported breakdown in commercial discussions leaves the Cape Verde match in doubt rather than confirmed. No agreement has been reached, according to the report, and the source’s assessment suggested there is only a minimal possibility of the teams meeting in the September-October window.

India’s focus will therefore be on the Panama fixture and the wider sequence of matches already scheduled against World Cup participants. The venue for the September 26 meeting with Panama is yet to be announced by the AIFF.
