Augsburg Hammer Frankfurt 4-1 to Lead Bundesliga Table

Augsburg came from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 on Sunday, a result that lifted the Bavarian club to the top of the Bundesliga table after two matches.

Jonathan Burkardt gave Frankfurt the opening goal, but Augsburg responded with four goals through Arijon Ibrahimovic, Robin Fellhauer, Alexis Claude Maurice and Fabian Rieder. The turnaround delivered an early-season landmark for Augsburg, who ended a Bundesliga round in first place for the first time in the club’s history.

The result matters beyond the three points because Augsburg, promoted to Germany’s top flight in 2011, had never previously finished a round at the summit. Their win in Frankfurt also coincided with Bayern Munich’s scoreless draw at Schalke on Saturday, ending Bayern’s 67-matchday run at the top of the league table.

Augsburg turn the match around in Frankfurt

Frankfurt made the first breakthrough through Burkardt, putting the hosts in front before Augsburg mounted their response. Ibrahimovic, Fellhauer, Claude Maurice and Rieder each scored as the visitors transformed the contest into a 4-1 victory.

Augsburg’s four different scorers underlined the scale of the comeback. After falling behind, the visitors found a way past Frankfurt repeatedly and left with a result that placed them ahead of the Bundesliga field at the end of the round.

For coach Manuel Baum, the table position represented a moment to savour. He said people live for occasions such as this and reflected on how those involved would remember being part of the Augsburg side that reached first place.

“As people we live for moments like this,” Baum told reporters. “When we see each other in a few years, we’ll tell stories about how we were the ones who topped the table with Augsburg. That’s something to enjoy for a day.”

Baum added that he had taken a screenshot of the standings, a sign of the significance attached to the club’s unprecedented position after only two matches of the campaign.

A historic round at the Bundesliga summit

Augsburg’s rise was aided by Bayern’s unexpected 0-0 draw at Schalke a day earlier. Bayern’s result ended a streak of 67 matchdays leading the Bundesliga table, a run that had lasted more than two years.

That opened the door for Augsburg to complete the round in first, and their win over Frankfurt ensured they took it. The achievement is particularly notable in the context of the club’s relatively recent arrival in the top division, having been promoted in 2011.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Mainz recorded a commanding 5-0 win at Hamburg. Phillip Tietz scored twice for Mainz, while Sheraldo Becker, Phillipp Mwene and Ransford Koenigsdoerffer also found the net.

Mainz’s five-goal display made it another decisive away result on a day led by Augsburg’s historic climb. Augsburg will now have the rare distinction of beginning the next Bundesliga round as leaders, while Frankfurt must respond after seeing an early lead disappear in a heavy home defeat.
