East Bengal Reserves Hold Mohun Bagan to 1-1 CFL Derby Draw

East Bengal’s reserve side held Mohun Bagan to a 1-1 draw in the Calcutta Football League Premier Division derby on September 7, 2026, with substitute Mohammad Bilal’s second-half header cancelling out Manvir Singh’s first-half opener in Barasat.

The result kept East Bengal unbeaten through the CFL 2026-27 Group 1 campaign. They finished with eight wins and three draws from 11 matches and moved above Bhawanipore on goal difference to top the group, while Mohun Bagan finished third. Both clubs had already qualified for the Super Six stage.

The contest carried an added edge after East Bengal’s recent 4-1 victory over Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup final, but the CFL meeting presented a different challenge. East Bengal fielded reserves against a Mohun Bagan team containing many first-team players, including Subhasish Bose, Apuia, Sahal Abdul Samad, Manvir Singh and Kiyan Nassiri.

Manvir gives Mohun Bagan the first-half lead

Mohun Bagan began on the front foot and had 62% possession after 20 minutes, but East Bengal’s young side remained organised and created an early opening of their own. Bijay Murmu curled a free-kick just wide from outside the box in the eighth minute.

East Bengal continued to resist for much of the first half, with Mohun Bagan unable to turn their possession into a clear opening during the opening half-hour. Chaku Mandi was booked in the 34th minute after a late challenge on Mehtab Singh.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute. A long ball found Manvir, who brought it under control before shooting from the edge of the box. East Bengal goalkeeper Gourab Shaw had come off his line and could not recover in time as the effort went in at the near post.

Mohun Bagan took their 1-0 advantage into the interval. In first-half stoppage time, Subhasish Bose met a corner with a header, but his attempt was straight at Shaw.

East Bengal responded positively after the restart. Their early second-half pressure was followed by a yellow card for Mohun Bagan attacker Sayan Banerjee after a poor challenge. At the other end, Mohun Bagan sent crosses into the East Bengal area and Sahal struck from the edge of the box, but the reserve defence held firm.

East Bengal had a major opportunity in the 55th minute after uncertainty between Mehtab and goalkeeper Deepprobhat. Akash Hemram was presented with an open goal after the ball was flicked across, but he could not direct his attempt on target. Monotosh was then attended to by the medical team and stretchered off in the 53rd minute.

Bilal’s header secures East Bengal’s unbeaten record

The equaliser came after a sustained spell of East Bengal pressure. Tanmay’s shot was blocked in the 61st minute before Bijay failed to hit the target with the rebound. A minute later, Chaku Mandi’s long-range effort was saved, and Uttam struck the crossbar with a header from the resulting corner.

East Bengal finally found their goal in the 64th minute. Bilal, introduced as a substitute, rose above the defence to head home from a corner and make it 1-1. The goal rewarded a spell in which East Bengal had created several chances despite facing a side with significant first-team representation.

Both teams had late opportunities to win it. Bilal headed wide after a cross from the right in the 79th minute. Mohun Bagan then threatened from a corner, but Shaw made a fingertip save to deny Sayan’s looping toe-poke during an 84th-minute goalmouth scramble. Hemram hit the side-netting in the 87th minute after driving into the area from the left.

Six minutes of added time brought no further goal, leaving East Bengal with the draw they needed to complete the group stage unbeaten. The next phase will see the top three teams from each group compete in the round-robin Super Six, with the eventual winner crowned CFL champion.
