Sophia Dunkley century seals England sweep over Ireland

Sophia Dunkley struck a run-a-ball 119 as England completed a dominant 3-0 ODI series clean sweep over Ireland, making 291 before dismissing the visitors for 177 in 44.2 overs. Dunkley’s second international century provided the foundation for England’s total, while Lauren Filer and Mady Villiers claimed three wickets each to finish the job with the ball.

England’s victory capped their international summer and underlined the value of opportunities handed to players during a series in which several established names were rested. The hosts had looked capable of setting a record total before Ireland fought back late in the innings, but their 291 still proved far beyond the visitors’ reach.

Dunkley builds England’s total before Ireland rally

Dunkley and Maia Bouchier gave England a strong start with an opening partnership of 73. Bouchier continued her good form with 39, while Dunkley ensured England retained control after the first wicket fell.

The opener began patiently, reaching her half-century from 63 balls. She then accelerated dramatically, taking only 37 balls for her next 50 runs. Her innings ended on 119 when she was caught by Prendergast at deep square leg, but by then she had set England up for a substantial score.

Jodi Grewcock contributed 35 before being caught and bowled, while Alice Capsey was run out for 10 after backing up. Freya Kemp made 23 and Dani Gibson produced an ODI-best 41 as England appeared to be pushing beyond 300.

However, Kemp’s dismissal at long-on triggered a sharp decline. England slipped from 260-4 and lost their final six wickets for 31 runs, eventually being dismissed with seven balls of the innings unused. After Dunkley departed in the 36th over, England managed only seven further boundaries.

Leg-spinner Cara Murray led Ireland’s response with 4-56. Her four-wicket haul helped the visitors recover some control after England’s top order had established such a commanding platform.

Filer and Villiers complete England’s 3-0 sweep

Ireland’s chase never developed the momentum required to challenge 291. Amy Hunter top-scored with 39, but no Ireland batter scored at a strike-rate above 100 as the required rate continued to rise.

Captain Gaby Lewis fell early for 16, a setback that immediately placed more pressure on the Irish batting order. Alice Tector made 29 from 59 balls, but Ireland struggled to convert their time at the crease into the pace needed for such a large pursuit.

Filer was central to England’s bowling display, returning 3-27 with her pace troubling the Ireland batters. Villiers also took 3-33 with her off-spin, including the important wickets of Hunter and Orla Prendergast. England were made to work during a slower middle-over phase, but they finished decisively as Ireland’s final five wickets fell for only 10 runs.

The clean sweep ends a series that gave England chances to assess players while Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone and Nat Sciver-Brunt were rested. Dunkley and Bouchier each made a century during the series, offering England encouraging evidence at the top of the order following Tammy Beaumont’s retirement earlier this year.

England’s next confirmed fixtures are at the Champions Trophy in February. A multi-format series against West Indies in the autumn and three ODIs against Sri Lanka are also listed in the schedule, with dates yet to be released.
