Yuki Bhambri Ruled Out of India-South Korea Davis Cup Tie

India will be without key doubles player Yuki Bhambri for their Davis Cup Qualifier against South Korea after he was ruled out with a thigh injury, leaving the side to reassess its combination days before the Round 2 tie. The winner of the contest will advance into the finals, adding importance to India’s revised selection plans.

India captain Rohit Rajpal confirmed Bhambri would not be available, with the team now working through alternatives in doubles during the week leading into the contest. Bhambri had been doubtful for the tie after suffering a right thigh strain before his US Open main-draw match.

“Yuki Bambri is not doing too well with his thigh and may not be available to play the Davis Cup. So, we are working on that area to see what our combination is going to be, which we shouldn’t be doing actually during the week before the Davis Cup. But unfortunately, we are having to do that,” Rajpal said.

India search for a new doubles balance

Bhambri’s absence is a significant setback because Rajpal had previously used him alongside Dhakshineswar Suresh in India’s Davis Cup outing against the Netherlands in Bengaluru. Rajpal said the pairing had worked effectively due to the complementary strengths of the two players.

According to the captain, Bhambri’s returning from the ad court addressed an area where Suresh was less strong, while Suresh’s serve provided support for Bhambri. Rajpal also highlighted Suresh’s work at the net as an important element of the combination.

“Last time I played Yuki and DK because Yuki’s big strength is his return from ad-court. And that is the weakness for DK. And Yuki’s serve is his weak point and DK has a huge serve. This opposite combination made them a very formidable pair,” Rajpal said.

He added: “Yuki would do that. And DK being a big guy and a great volleyer would take the pressure off Yuki’s serving. So, the combination worked very well last time for us.”

With Bhambri unavailable, veteran N Sriram Balaji has emerged as India’s leading doubles option. Rajpal said Balaji would be the anchor for the doubles effort after recently breaking into the world’s top 50 in doubles.

“Bala is playing very, very well. He is going to be the anchor for doubles this time. And as you know, he has yesterday broken into the top 50 in doubles,” Rajpal said.

India are also waiting for Niki Poonacha to arrive as he awaits his visa, while left-handed Anirudh Chandrasekar has travelled from New York. Rajpal said the squad has been trying different pairings daily as it prepares for the South Korea tie.

“We’re trying different combinations of doubles every day at the moment and we’ll be ready,” Rajpal said.

Slow Seoul conditions add another selection factor

The final decision is not solely about replacing Bhambri. Rajpal said the slow conditions in Seoul could influence how India deploy Suresh, particularly if he is required for singles and faces demanding matches on the opening day.

“Since the courts are slow, we don’t know how tough matches are going to be in terms of the legs that is required for DK,” Rajpal said. He stressed that India do not want Suresh compromised for the second day’s singles action.

Rajpal said the sequence of the first-day singles matches could therefore shape the doubles selection. India’s task is to find a workable combination without Bhambri while managing the workload of the players available. With a place in the finals at stake, the doubles decision has become an immediate focus for the visiting team.
