Rachin Ravindra in Doubt for India T20Is After Shoulder Injury

New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra is in doubt for the T20I series against India after dislocating his right shoulder during a promotional shoot in Auckland. Ravindra was attempting a diving catch during filming earlier this week when he landed awkwardly on a safety mat.

Initial assessments took place on Friday, and medical specialists cleared Ravindra of major structural damage. However, New Zealand Cricket has not put a timeline on his return, saying his availability will be determined by his progress through the first weeks of rehabilitation.

The uncertainty comes with New Zealand’s next assignment more than a month away. Their all-format home series against India begins with five T20Is on October 22, while the squad for that T20I series is due to be announced next week. NZC said it remained unclear whether Ravindra would be able to feature.

Rehabilitation to determine Ravindra’s availability

New Zealand performance manager Mike Sandle described the incident as an unfortunate injury and said the immediate focus was on Ravindra’s recovery. He added that the activities involved in the commercial shoot had been agreed in advance by all parties and that appropriate safety measures were in place.

“It was a really unfortunate injury,” Sandle said. “We’re gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can.”

Sandle said the injury was a freak accident and that New Zealand Cricket would continue to review its processes around events of this nature. The governing body’s update made clear that the early medical outcome was encouraging in terms of structural damage, but it did not offer a firm prediction for when Ravindra could resume playing.

That leaves the coming rehabilitation period as the key factor in the allrounder’s immediate schedule. With the T20I squad announcement approaching and the first match against India set for October 22, New Zealand will assess his progress before making a decision on his involvement.

Head coach Rob Walter said New Zealand did not intend to rush Ravindra back, particularly with a demanding Test programme ahead. Walter pointed to the volume of Test cricket on the horizon over the next six months as a reason to prioritise the player’s recovery rather than force an early return.

“With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don’t want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to,” Walter said. “He’s in great hands in terms of his rehab and we look forward to welcoming him back soon.”

India series schedule adds to selection focus

The India tour will be a lengthy home campaign for New Zealand. The five-match T20I series is scheduled to finish on November 1, after which the teams will play five ODIs and then two Tests, all during November.

There is also an India A tour of New Zealand in the lead-up to the Test series. India A are due to play three four-day matches from October 24 to November 10, adding another layer to a busy period of cricket in New Zealand.

For now, Ravindra’s status for the India T20Is remains unresolved. The initial clearance of major structural damage provides an important early update, but NZC has tied his return to rehabilitation progress rather than a fixed date. The next weeks will therefore determine whether he can be considered for the opening phase of the India series or whether New Zealand will continue his recovery with the wider home schedule in mind.
