Joe Root Reaches 23,000 International Runs for England

Joe Root became the first England batter to score 23,000 runs in international cricket during the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham, reaching the landmark in 521 innings. The achievement also moved Root ahead of Sachin Tendulkar on the list of quickest batters to the milestone.

Needing three runs to reach 23,000, Root got there with a boundary played with a flick of the wrists. He is the eighth batter overall to pass the mark and the second quickest to do so, according to the milestone figures. India’s Virat Kohli remains the fastest, having reached 23,000 international runs in 490 innings, while Tendulkar did so in 522 innings.

The landmark adds another notable entry to Root’s international record and underlines the scale of his production across formats for England. He is the first player from England to join a group that includes some of cricket’s most prolific run-scorers.

Root joins an elite international run-scoring group

Root is now alongside Tendulkar, Kohli and Rahul Dravid of India; Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene; Australia’s Ricky Ponting; and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis as the players to have accumulated 23,000 international runs.

Completing the feat in 521 innings gives Root a narrow advantage over Tendulkar in this particular measure. Tendulkar’s 522-innings mark had stood as one of the benchmarks among the players to have crossed 23,000 international runs, but Root reached the same total one innings sooner.

For England, the milestone is especially significant because no other player from the country had previously reached the 23,000-run total in international cricket. Root’s achievement came in an ODI, a format in which he is already England’s highest run-scorer.

Before the first ODI against Sri Lanka, Root had made 7,826 ODI runs at an average of more than 51, with 20 centuries. Those figures place his one-day record alongside his more widely recognised achievements in Test cricket.

Root’s international total is built on sustained output over a long career, and the 23,000-run mark provides another measure of that consistency. It also places him in a small group whose records span major eras of international cricket.

Test records remain in focus for Root

Root has already moved beyond Tendulkar in several Test-cricket record lists. Most recently, he broke Tendulkar’s record for the most half-centuries in Test cricket, extending a series of milestones that have brought the England batter closer to the leading names in the format’s history.

The largest Test-run benchmark remains Tendulkar’s all-time record of 15,921. Root currently has 14,278 Test runs and is 1,643 behind that total. The gap means his pursuit of the record remains a prominent part of the wider discussion around his career.

Root is set to turn 36 in December and is also 31 Tests short of Tendulkar’s record of 200 Test appearances. The 23,000-run milestone against Sri Lanka does not decide those longer-term pursuits, but it reinforces his position among the game’s most accomplished modern batters.

His boundary to reach the landmark in Durham therefore carried more than immediate significance. It made Root England’s first 23,000-run international batter, placed him second on the innings list behind Kohli, and moved him past Tendulkar in another statistical category.
