India to Meet Afghanistan in Asian Games Quarter-finals

India will face Afghanistan in the Asian Games men’s cricket quarter-finals on September 28, setting up a repeat of the gold-medal match from the previous edition. India enter the knockout stage as defending champions after the four group-stage qualifiers completed the quarter-final line-up.

Afghanistan, Nepal, Hong Kong and Malaysia advanced from the short group phase to join the four top-seeded sides, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, who had automatically qualified for the last eight. The draw has produced four knockout fixtures across September 28 and 29.

Asian Games cricket quarter-final fixtures confirmed

Hong Kong will play Pakistan in the first quarter-final on September 28. The second match that day will see Afghanistan take on India, renewing a contest that decided the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in October 2023.

Nepal will meet Sri Lanka in the third quarter-final on September 29, while Bangladesh will face Malaysia in the fourth and final last-eight match on the same day.

Nepal and Afghanistan came through Group A, with hosts Japan eliminated. In Group B, Malaysia and Hong Kong progressed while Oman were knocked out. Rain affected the closing group-stage schedule: Japan’s match against Nepal was not completed, and Malaysia’s game against Oman had no ball bowled.

The India-Afghanistan fixture carries clear recent tournament context. India won the Asian Games gold-medal game against Afghanistan in 2023, while Bangladesh claimed bronze after beating Pakistan in the third-place playoff. India now begin their title defence against the same opponent from that final.

Rain could shape the knockout schedule

Weather is a significant factor heading into the quarter-finals. The forecast for Monday, when Hong Kong play Pakistan and Afghanistan meet India, indicates a 91% chance of daytime rain and a 22% chance of thunderstorms. Tuesday’s forecast for Nepal versus Sri Lanka and Bangladesh versus Malaysia is similarly wet, with an 89% chance of rain and an 18% chance of thundershowers.

If a knockout match is abandoned without a result, the higher-seeded side based on the ICC’s official T20I rankings will be declared the winner. That regulation adds importance to the rankings of the four top-seeded teams, who received direct entry to the quarter-finals.

The projected conditions are more encouraging later in the tournament, with the weather expected to be friendlier on the day of the semi-finals on Thursday and during the medal playoffs on Saturday. For now, however, all eight quarter-finalists must prepare for the prospect that rain could have a direct bearing on who reaches the final four.

India’s meeting with Afghanistan is the standout fixture of the opening knockout day because of its connection to the last Asian Games final. Pakistan’s contest with Hong Kong completes Monday’s programme, before Sri Lanka face Nepal and Bangladesh play Malaysia on Tuesday.

The quarter-finals will determine the four teams that continue in the medal race. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh begin as the automatically qualified top seeds, while Afghanistan, Nepal, Hong Kong and Malaysia have earned their places through the group stage.
