Asian Games 2026: Harjinder Ninth as India Finish With One Medal

Harjinder Kaur finished ninth in the women’s 69kg competition as India’s weightlifting campaign at the 2026 Asian Games ended on Sunday with a single medal, Mirabai Chanu’s silver in the women’s 49kg event.

Kaur recorded a 204kg total from 94kg in the snatch and 110kg in the clean and jerk. The result placed the 29-year-old Punjab lifter ninth in a field of 10 competitors, with her snatch performance proving costly in the final standings.

A two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, Kaur missed two of her three snatch attempts. Those misses took her out of medal contention early in the competition. She then made only one lift in the clean and jerk, completing her event with the 204kg combined mark.

Harjinder’s 204kg total leaves her ninth

Kaur’s successful snatch lift of 94kg and clean-and-jerk lift of 110kg gave her a total of 204kg. That figure was 69kg behind the winning total in the women’s 69kg event.

Song Kuk-hyang of North Korea won the gold medal with 273kg, made up of 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk. The two-time world champion set world records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total during her gold-medal performance.

Chinese Taipei’s Wen-huei Chen secured silver with a 232kg total, comprising 106kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk. Bahrain’s Ingrid Grueso took bronze after posting 229kg, with lifts of 101kg and 128kg.

The medal positions underlined the sizeable gap between the top three and Kaur’s final total. Song’s 273kg was the standout mark of the event, while Chen and Grueso completed the podium with totals above 225kg. Kaur’s 204kg placed her outside that contest after the early setbacks in the snatch.

For India, Kaur’s event was the last weightlifting competition of the Asian Games campaign. Her ninth-place finish meant there was no addition to the team’s medal return in the sport.

Mirabai Chanu’s silver is India’s lone weightlifting medal

India completed its weightlifting programme with one medal: the silver won by Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 49kg event. Kaur’s result in the women’s 69kg was therefore the final entry in the Indian weightlifting campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.

The campaign featured contrasting outcomes across the two Indian medal-relevant performances cited in the event results. Mirabai’s silver delivered India’s place on the weightlifting medal table, while Kaur was unable to recover from her missed snatch attempts in a tightly contested 10-lifter field.

Kaur nevertheless completed both sections of the competition, registering 94kg in the snatch and 110kg in the clean and jerk. Her total of 204kg confirmed ninth place, while Song’s record-breaking 273kg earned the women’s 69kg gold.

With the women’s 69kg contest concluded, India’s weightlifting campaign at Asian Games 2026 was officially complete. Mirabai Chanu’s women’s 49kg silver stands as the team’s only medal from the sport, while Harjinder Kaur’s ninth-place finish closed the programme.
