Bihar Steps Up Rajgir Plans for 2030 Women’s Hockey World Cup

Bihar has stepped up preparations to host the 2030 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup in Rajgir, with Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh saying the state government’s proposal for the tournament has been accepted. The planned event is being presented as a major opportunity for Bihar to expand its role in international sport while creating greater visibility for women’s hockey and emerging players in the state.

The proposal was discussed during the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, where Singh was present alongside Bihar Sports Department Secretary Deepak Anand and Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Singh. The report, however, did not provide details of final hosting arrangements or formal confirmation of Rajgir as the venue by the International Hockey Federation.

For Bihar, the significance of the proposed World Cup extends beyond staging an international competition. The state sees the event as a chance for young women hockey players to watch leading players from around the world and gain inspiration from elite-level competition. Singh said the tournament could contribute to a stronger environment for promoting women’s hockey and identifying talent across Bihar.

Rajgir’s recent international hockey record

Rajgir has built experience as a host city through two major international hockey tournaments in recent years. That record has helped establish the city as a venue capable of staging continental competition and has increased the visibility of Bihar’s sporting infrastructure.

The city hosted the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy from November 11 to 20, 2024. India, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand took part in the tournament, with India defeating China 1-0 in the final to win the title. The competition gave Rajgir a high-profile women’s hockey event and provided a recent example of international teams competing in the city.

Rajgir then hosted the Men’s Asia Cup from August 29 to September 7, 2025. India won that tournament as well, adding another international event to the city’s hosting record. Together, the two competitions have provided Bihar with practical experience in organizing events involving international teams.

The proposed 2030 tournament would represent a further step from continental events to a global women’s hockey competition. Bihar is positioning the World Cup as a platform that could bring international attention to Rajgir and the state’s sports facilities, while also linking major-event hosting with grassroots participation.

Singh has emphasized the possible impact of the event on young athletes in Bihar. She said that the presence of leading women players could give local hockey players an opportunity to observe international-level competition closely, set new goals and aspire to reach the global stage.

“Our dream is that the world’s daughters come to Bihar and Bihar’s daughters reach the world,” Singh said, outlining the state’s ambition to connect local athletes with the wider international sporting community.

Bihar’s approach places women’s hockey development alongside the wider profile of hosting a World Cup. The state believes that exposure to the world’s leading athletes could help encourage participation, support the identification of emerging talent and strengthen the environment around the women’s game.
