Virat Kohli targets new level after 15,000 ODI runs
Virat Kohli says he is determined to “unlock a new version” of himself after reaching 15,000 ODI runs and scoring an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls in India’s eight-wicket win over West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
The India batter reached the landmark during a chase of 296 in the first ODI, with India finishing on 300 for 2 in 41.4 overs and 50 balls to spare. Kohli’s innings included nine sixes, a new personal best, and 10 fours as he raised his 55th ODI century.
At 37, Kohli said the challenge of adding another gear to his game has provided fresh motivation. He described the shift as something that can benefit him in every competition he plays, whether for India or in the IPL, while helping him approach his batting with a freer mind.
A positive approach with control
“I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and, you know, play a gear to higher end,” Kohli said after the match. “Yeah, that was exciting for me to work on. Again, it excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career, which will eventually help, you know, anything that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL. It’s really helped me a lot to play with a free mind and I think that’s what’s working for me.”
Kohli hit a six within his first five deliveries in the innings and continued to attack the West Indies bowling. Three successive fours in the 29th over took him beyond 15,000 ODI runs, making him the second player to reach the milestone.
The century was also his third-fastest in the format. Kohli has scored 523 ODI runs in 2026, the third-highest total for the year, and his strike rate of 116.74 is matched or bettered by only three players among the leading 50 run-scorers.
While he has traditionally built innings around managing risk and batting deep, Kohli said he is now looking to maximise scoring opportunities once he feels settled. That adjustment, he stressed, does not mean abandoning responsibility in pursuit of attacking shots.
“I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can,” Kohli said. “So I’m going to continue to play like that, but, you know, not be reckless. There is a fine line, which as a professional, as an experienced player, I should have the ability to execute in this way without, you know, playing reckless shots and get the team through.”
Fitness, mental freshness and gratitude
Kohli linked his more liberated batting approach to his physical conditioning. For him, a fit body provides the platform for a clear mind and the ability to visualise the innings he wants to play before executing it on the field.
“I think to follow a free mind, you need a fit body,” he said. “So for me, it works the other way around. I stay physically fit and then I’m able to visualise the game in the way that I want to play, which allows me the best chance to go out there and execute in the way that I did tonight.”
He added that the game is largely mental for him, saying his preparation is centred on staying fresh, remaining in the present and becoming familiar with this attacking template more often.
Kohli also said that perspective remains central to his motivation. He spoke of looking back at his journey from childhood, rather than being consumed by attention, fame or achievements, and said that reflection makes him grateful for the opportunity to represent India.
“My focus has never really been on these milestones,” Kohli said. “It’s just understanding the situation along the course of just doing the job for the team.” The 15,000-run mark and his unbeaten 139 underline the impact of that outlook, with Kohli aiming to pair positivity with the control required to take India through chases.
