India Thrash Bangladesh 10-0 to Set Up Pakistan Semi-Final

India’s men’s hockey team defeated Bangladesh 10-0 in their final Asian Games Pool A fixture, sealing top spot and setting up a semi-final against Pakistan on October 1. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a hat-trick as the defending champions completed an emphatic group-stage campaign despite heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch.

The result gave India five wins from five in Pool A, following victories over Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea and Bangladesh. They finished the pool with a goal difference of +45 and will have a two-day break before facing Pakistan in a high-profile last-four contest. Malaysia and South Korea will meet in the other semi-final.

India overcome rain delays to take command

The match began 30 minutes late after Pakistan’s game against Oman was suspended for around 15 minutes because of heavy rain, requiring the day’s schedule to be adjusted. Conditions remained difficult as rain left both the players and surface drenched, but India established control early.

Abhishek opened the scoring in the third minute. Sanjay was involved in the attacking move and, from a tight angle inside the Bangladesh circle, found Abhishek. The forward shifted left before firing a reverse hit beyond the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

India continued to create attacks but did not immediately add to their advantage. Bangladesh earned a penalty corner in the 12th minute, where Amirul Islam’s drag-flick was stopped by goalkeeper Suraj Karkera. Bangladesh then successfully used a video referral in the 15th minute to overturn an Indian penalty-corner decision.

There was a brief concern when Abhishek was helped off by the physio shortly afterwards, although he later returned to the pitch. As drizzle became heavier rain in the second quarter, the surface became increasingly waterlogged.

India made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Mandeep Singh was blocked inside the circle, leading to a penalty corner. Jugraj Singh’s drag-flick struck the foot of a defender on the post and the umpire awarded a penalty stroke. Jugraj converted the stroke to double the lead.

Harmanpreet added the third goal in the 27th minute after an aerial ball found Mandeep, who created another penalty corner. The India captain struck a powerful flick past the Bangladesh defence, giving his side a 3-0 half-time advantage.

India resumed their scoring after the interval in the 32nd minute when Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh combined with quick touch-play, leaving Sukhjeet to guide the ball into an open goal. Harmanpreet narrowly missed from another penalty corner in the 38th minute, but he did not have to wait long for his second.

Harmanpreet hat-trick caps 10-goal finish

Vivek Sagar Prasad won a penalty corner in the 40th minute, and Harmanpreet converted again with a drag-flick to make it 5-0. Shilanand Lakra then scored in the 44th and 45th minutes as India’s advantage grew to seven goals.

The scoring continued late in the game. Harmanpreet completed his hat-trick in the 45th minute, while Sanjay scored in the 59th and Mandeep struck in the 60th to complete the 10-0 result. Abhishek, Jugraj, Sukhjeet, Shilanand, Sanjay and Mandeep joined Harmanpreet on the scoresheet in a commanding final pool display.

India now move into the semi-finals with an unbeaten Pool A record and a chance to reach the Asian Games final when they meet Pakistan on October 1.
