Australia name squads for Bangladesh ODIs and New Zealand T20Is

Australia have named a 14-player group for their home limited-overs assignments against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October, with Sophie Molineux set to captain the side as staff monitor her recovery from a hip injury.

The group will be used for a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Brisbane from October 9 before Australia meet New Zealand in three T20Is in Sydney from October 18. The announcement follows Australia’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup triumph in the UK earlier this year and gives the champions an immediate return to international action at home.

Bangladesh ODIs carry Champions Trophy importance

Australia’s three ODIs against Bangladesh are part of the ICC Women’s Championship, adding significance to the opening series of the October schedule. Selector Shawn Flegler highlighted the value of the matches as Australia look ahead to next year’s ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.

Flegler said Bangladesh would provide a strong examination, particularly because of the quality in their bowling attack. He also pointed to the opportunity for Australia’s batters to gain exposure to subcontinent-style bowling before the Champions Trophy.

All three Bangladesh ODIs will be played at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. The series begins on Friday, October 9, followed by matches on Sunday, October 11 and Wednesday, October 14. The three fixtures give Australia a focused block of 50-over cricket before the squad switches format for the New Zealand series.

Molineux’s involvement will be monitored as she continues her recovery from a hip injury. Australia have nonetheless named her as captain for the October assignments, with the squad including Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll and Georgia Wareham.

Injury updates within the 14-player group

Fast bowler Darcy Brown is unavailable after missing out because of a back injury. Fellow young fast bowler Lucy Hamilton has also been named in the group but will sit out the three ODIs against Bangladesh due to a quad strain.

The squad announcement keeps the same 14-player group in place for both October assignments, while the availability updates mean Australia will manage their resources across the ODI and T20I legs. The selection provides continuity after the Women’s T20 World Cup success while also accounting for the recovery status of several players.

New Zealand T20Is follow in Sydney

After the Bangladesh series concludes in Brisbane, Australia will host the White Ferns in three T20Is at North Sydney Oval. The first match is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, with the remaining games set for Tuesday, October 20 and Thursday, October 22.

The New Zealand matches give Australia three further home internationals in the shorter format after their World Cup-winning campaign. With Bangladesh providing an ODI challenge and New Zealand following in T20 cricket, October presents Australia with two distinct assignments across consecutive series.

For Australia, the Bangladesh ODIs matter in the ICC Women’s Championship and offer preparation for the Champions Trophy in India, while the New Zealand T20Is extend the team’s home schedule following its global title win. Molineux’s fitness will be closely managed, and Brown and Hamilton’s injury situations are the key availability notes ahead of the six-match program.
