Sumit Nagal Reaches Asian Games Quarterfinals in Style
Sumit Nagal reached the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Asian Games after a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin on Wednesday, while fellow Indian Dhakshineswar Suresh exited in the third round.
Seeded seventh and ranked 249th, Nagal took control of his contest against Fomin and completed the straight-sets win to move into the last eight. The result keeps India’s singles challenge alive in the tournament, with Nagal now set for a difficult quarterfinal test.
Nagal sets up Yibing Wu quarterfinal
Nagal will next meet China’s Yibing Wu, the third seed and world No. 111, in the quarterfinals. Wu represents a formidable next opponent for the Indian, who has faced the Chinese player once before.
That previous meeting came at the 2024 Shanghai Masters, where Wu won 6-3, 6-2. Nagal will therefore head into the Asian Games quarterfinal with a chance to reverse that result and extend his run into the medal rounds.
The win over Fomin was Nagal’s latest efficient performance in the singles event. He won the first set 6-3 before raising his advantage further in the second, sealing the match 6-2 to avoid a prolonged contest. His place in the final eight makes him India’s remaining highlighted men’s singles contender following Suresh’s defeat.
For Nagal, the immediate significance is clear: victory over Wu would send him into the semifinals and keep him in contention at the Asian Games. The matchup also gives him a quick opportunity to revisit a recent defeat against a higher-ranked opponent.
Suresh, meanwhile, was unable to join Nagal in the quarterfinals. He lost 3-6, 4-6 to sixth seed Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei in his third-round match. The result ended his singles campaign after he had reached the last 16 with a straight-sets win over Indonesia’s Gunawan Trismuwantara on Tuesday.
Doubles campaign faces a setback
India also suffered a narrow loss in the men’s doubles quarterfinals, where N Sriram Balaji and Anirudh Chandrasekar were beaten by China’s Fumin Chiang and Tianhui Ziang. The contest went to a deciding match tiebreak after the Indian pair claimed the opening-set tiebreaker.
Balaji and Chandrasekar won the first set 7-6(4), but the Chinese duo levelled the match by taking the second set 7-6(7). In the deciding match tiebreak, Chiang and Ziang edged the Indian pair 10-8 to complete a 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 8-10 victory.
India still had another men’s doubles quarterfinal scheduled later in the day, with Yuki Bhambri and Suresh due to play. Suresh’s singles exit meant his attention could turn to that doubles opportunity alongside Bhambri.
Nagal’s quarterfinal against Wu now becomes the central next fixture for India in the men’s singles draw. Having moved through Fomin in straight sets, the seventh seed will look to build on that momentum against the third seed as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
