Ancy Sojan Responds to Trolls After Asian Games Silver

CategoriesAthletics

Asian Games silver medallist Ancy Sojan has responded to online criticism of her appearance, hairstyle and jewellery by saying that social media trolls cannot take away the medal, records or achievement she earned in the long jump competition.

The 25-year-old won silver after producing a best jump of 6.53m. She led the competition for a major part of the final before China’s Huang Yingying moved into gold-medal position with a late 6.55m effort. The close finish left Sojan with another Asian Games medal and made her a two-time medallist at the event.

Speaking after arriving in Delhi, Sojan addressed the comments directed at her following the performance. She said the people trolling her did not understand the value of the award or the work she had put in to win it.

Sojan says medal remains her answer

Sojan made clear that the criticism would not alter her approach to her appearance or affect her confidence. “Let them troll because they do not have this award and don’t know the value of this medal and how much I worked hard for this medal and there trolling is never gonna (going to) be make me lose (remove) these (her hair clips),” she told PTI.

She added: “They can’t take my award, my medal and records or anything. I will continue this as this is my confidence.”

Her response placed the focus back on the result in the competition: a 6.53m best effort and a silver medal decided by a margin of two centimetres. Huang’s 6.55m jump came late in the final, changing the order after Sojan had spent much of the event in front.

For Sojan, the silver is not simply a single-day outcome. It represents a second Asian Games medal, a milestone she said she was proud to claim. Her comments stressed both the importance of the award and the effort required to reach the podium.

The narrow gap to gold also gave her an immediate point of reflection. Sojan said she had accepted the result despite having pushed hard in the competition, and she is already looking beyond the final toward further targets.

Close gold miss turns focus to bigger goals

“That jump was nothing for me actually I tried hard and I am accepted the fate that after the third sixth jump it is not mine. I need to work hard, god might have some other plans for me and something big is waiting for me,” Sojan said.

Her assessment acknowledged both the disappointment of a late change at the top of the standings and the value of taking silver. With Huang winning gold through the 6.55m effort, Sojan’s 6.53m remained enough for a podium finish in a closely contested final.

Sojan also spoke of the pride she felt in becoming a two-time Asian Games medallist. “I am happy that I made my country proud, this is the second time and I am two time Asian Games medallist, I am proudly announcing that,” she said.

The result gives Sojan a notable achievement to carry forward, while her response to the online reaction made her position equally clear: criticism of her appearance does not change the medal she won, the records she referenced or the significance she attaches to her work.
