Nethra Kumanan Wins Asian Games 2026 Sailing Bronze

CategoriesAthletics

Nethra Kumanan won the bronze medal in the women’s dinghy sailing event at the 2026 Asian Games on Friday, securing her first podium finish at the continental competition in her fourth appearance. The Indian sailor completed the regatta with 14 points, finishing behind Thailand’s Sophia Montgomery and Singapore’s Jania Ang.

Kumanan, a 29-year-old two-time Olympian from Chennai, was third in the final standings after combining seven points from the final races with seven from the qualification races. Montgomery took gold with five points, while Ang claimed silver on 13.

The result ends a long wait for an Asian Games medal for Kumanan, who had previously competed at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions. She had finished fourth at two of those Games before breaking through for bronze in 2026.

How Kumanan secured the women’s dinghy bronze

Sailing points are determined by finishing position in each race, with first place receiving one point. The lowest overall total wins the regatta, making every placing across the qualification and final races significant.

Kumanan won the second of her final two races and finished sixth in the other. Those final-race results gave her seven points in that phase, matching the seven she had accumulated in qualification races to produce a total of 14.

Montgomery’s total of five points put her clear at the top of the women’s dinghy standings, while Ang finished one point ahead of Kumanan to take silver. Kumanan’s third-place finish nevertheless delivered a landmark medal after her earlier near-misses at the Asian Games.

The bronze also adds to India’s sailing returns at the 2026 Asian Games. A day earlier, Manu Francis and Kurisinkal Noble won silver in the men’s skiff competition, while Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma earned bronze in the women’s team event.

Vishnu Saravanan finishes fourth in men’s event

India’s Vishnu Saravanan finished fourth in the men’s competition despite placing second in both of his final races. The 27-year-old Olympian recorded an accumulated qualification score of 17 points, leaving him with 21 points overall.

Saravanan had won bronze at the previous edition of the Asian Games, but this time finished outside the medals. Korea’s Jeemin Ha won gold with nine points, while Nicholas Halliday of Hong Kong, China, took silver with 11. Malaysia’s Mohd Khairulnizam was third on 14 points.

For Kumanan, the women’s dinghy bronze is the defining result of her Asian Games record so far. Her fourth campaign at the event produced the podium finish that had eluded her in previous appearances, and her final-race win proved crucial in securing third place on 14 points.

India’s sailing contingent therefore leaves this stage of the 2026 Asian Games with medals across multiple events, led by Kumanan’s individual bronze in the women’s dinghy competition.
