Denmark Open 2026: Satwik-Chirag Out in First Round
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered their second successive first-round exit after losing to China’s He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu at the Denmark Open 2026 on Wednesday. The fifth-seeded Indian men’s doubles pair went down 21-12, 15-21, 19-21 in a round-of-32 contest that lasted exactly one hour.
The result was part of a difficult opening day for the Indian players mentioned in the tournament update, with Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda also exiting in the first round. Rankireddy and Shetty, ranked world No. 5, had started strongly against the world No. 37 Chinese pairing but could not convert their opening-game advantage.
Satwik-Chirag let opening advantage slip
Rankireddy and Shetty took the first game 21-12 to establish control of the contest. He and Ren responded in the second game, however, winning 21-15 to level the match and force a deciding game.
The decider was closely contested, with the Indian pair remaining in contention deep into the match. But He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu edged the third game 21-19 to complete the comeback and move on from the round of 32.
It marked a second consecutive opening-round defeat for Rankireddy and Shetty against a lower-ranked pair, following their Asian Games exit last month in Aichi-Nagoya. The Denmark Open result comes after the pair’s quarterfinal exit at the 2026 BWF World Championships, as cited in the tournament report.
For the Chinese duo, the victory represented a notable win over the higher-ranked Indian partnership. For Rankireddy and Shetty, the narrow third-game margin underlined how close they came to extending their Denmark Open campaign beyond the opening round.
Shetty and Hooda also bow out
In the men’s singles round of 32, Ayush Shetty lost 11-21, 21-13, 10-21 to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan. Shetty was beaten in the opening game before responding to take the second 21-13, taking the contest into a deciding game.
Farhan regained the advantage in the third, winning 21-10 to seal the match. The contest lasted one hour and four minutes, with Shetty’s second-game response ultimately not enough to carry him into the next round.
Unnati Hooda also fought a three-game match in the women’s singles round of 32 before losing to China’s Han Qian Xi. Hooda was narrowly beaten 23-21 in the first game, recovered to win the second 21-16, and then lost the decider 21-16. Her match lasted one hour and six minutes.
The three exits added to Lakshya Sen’s earlier first-round defeat against Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Kidambi Srikanth, meanwhile, progressed to the second round, making him the Indian player identified in the report as advancing beyond the opening stage.
What the Denmark Open results mean
The opening-round outcomes ended the tournament runs of Rankireddy, Shetty and Hooda, while also leaving Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty to reflect on another close loss after taking the first game. Their 19-21 defeat in the decider decided a one-hour match that had begun in emphatic fashion for the Indian pair.
With Srikanth through to the second round, India retained an interest in the event, but the early exits of the men’s doubles fifth seeds and two singles players shaped Wednesday’s Denmark Open results.
