Rafael Camara Set for Haas Formula 1 Debut in 2027
Brazilian driver Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2027, the US-based team announced on Thursday. The 21-year-old will join Britain’s Oliver Bearman in the Haas line-up after the team confirmed Esteban Ocon’s departure last month.
Camara arrives with significant momentum from the junior ranks. He currently leads the Formula 2 championship with Invicta Racing and won the Formula 3 title with Trident in 2025. His move gives Haas a young driver pairing for 2027, with both Camara and Bearman aged 21.
The announcement is an important career milestone for Camara, who has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2021. He said his immediate focus would be on preparing as thoroughly as possible for the challenge ahead and learning closely with his new team.
Camara earns Haas opportunity after junior success
Camara’s progression through Formula 3 and Formula 2 has placed him among the leading young drivers moving toward Formula 1. His 2025 Formula 3 title with Trident was followed by a strong 2026 campaign in Formula 2, where he is competing for Invicta Racing and leads the championship.
That record was central to Haas’s decision to sign him for 2027. Team principal Ayao Komatsu described Camara as a young and impressive talent, pointing to the Brazilian’s achievements across the junior formulas.
For Camara, the Haas seat represents the next step after several years in the Ferrari Driver Academy. He acknowledged that there will be much to learn as he prepares for Formula 1, while expressing enthusiasm about working with the team.
His arrival also follows a change at Haas, which confirmed the departure of French driver Ocon last month. Bearman, who will be Camara’s teammate, remains part of the team’s plans for 2027, giving Haas two drivers at the same early stage of their Formula 1 careers.
Brazil set to have two drivers on the 2027 grid
Camara’s promotion will also carry significance for Brazilian motorsport. He is set to join Gabriel Bortoleto, who will retain his place at Audi, meaning Brazil will have two drivers on the Formula 1 grid in 2027.
It will be the first time since 2016 that two Brazilian drivers have lined up in Formula 1. That season, Felipe Massa raced for Williams and Felipe Nasr drove for Sauber. Camara and Bortoleto will therefore restore a two-driver Brazilian presence in the championship next year.
Haas announced Camara’s future signing during the current Formula 1 season, with the team seventh in the constructors’ standings on 30 points after the Singapore Grand Prix. The championship’s next race is the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on October 25.
For Haas, the 2027 announcement provides clarity on its future driver line-up. For Camara, it confirms a Formula 1 opportunity earned after a rapid rise through the categories below the sport’s top level, with his current Formula 2 campaign still providing a major platform before his debut.
