Bezzecchi Tops Phillip Island Friday as Aprilias Fill Top Five

Marco Bezzecchi set the fastest time on Friday at Phillip Island, recovering from an early fall to post an untouchable 1:26.775 as Aprilia placed four machines in the top five. Raul Fernandez finished second and reigning World Champion Marc Marquez was third, surrounded by Aprilia riders heading into Saturday’s Sprint and qualifying action.

The afternoon session delivered a changing order, two red flags and several late crashes before Bezzecchi’s final benchmark stood. His pace put Aprilia Racing at the front, while Fernandez, Ai Ogura and Jorge Martin completed a strong day for the manufacturer in second, fourth and fifth respectively.

Red flags and late laps reshape Friday practice

Jack Miller was the first rider to crash in the session, falling at Turn 6 after also suffering a fast Turn 1 spill in FP1. A few minutes later, Bezzecchi went down following contact with Alex Marquez under braking at Turn 4. Debris on the circuit brought out the first red flag, although Bezzecchi was reported to be OK.

After the restart, the session was stopped again when a wallaby entered the track. Once running resumed, Bezzecchi quickly showed no apparent ill effects from his earlier incident, leading Marc Marquez and Fernandez before the order shifted again.

Pedro Acosta briefly moved to the top, while Fabio Di Giannantonio was also among the early frontrunners. At that stage, Johann Zarco, Fabio Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia and Miller were outside the provisional top 10 and facing Q1. Iker Lecuona was eighth, within seven tenths of the leading pace and ahead of teammate Alex Marquez.

With eight minutes remaining, the Marquez brothers moved into first and second, Marc Marquez edging Alex with the first lap in the 1:26s of the weekend. Fernandez then split the brothers, while Ogura rose to fifth. Martin and Bezzecchi were sixth and seventh for Aprilia Racing as the field prepared for the final push for Q2 places.

Alex Marquez crashed at Turn 4 with two minutes left, bringing out yellow flags and ending his session. He was OK and retained a place in Q2, but the closing moments still produced major changes at the front.

Aprilia strength sets up a tight Saturday

Bezzecchi and Fernandez made late gains to take first and second, while Ogura held fourth. Martin’s final flying lap put him fifth, leaving four Aprilias in the top five with Marc Marquez in third. Marc Marquez also had an issue during his Practice start at the end of the session and returned by scooter.

Enea Bastianini claimed top KTM honours in seventh after a late improvement, with Acosta only 0.026 seconds behind in eighth. Diogo Moreira took ninth and Di Giannantonio completed the top 10.

Zarco was pushed out of the top 10 late on, while home rider Miller finished 12th. Brad Binder, Bagnaia, Quartararo and Lecuona will also go through Q1. The margins remain exceptionally close: 14 riders were covered by less than a second, and positions 11 through 19 were separated by less than six tenths.

Saturday qualifying is scheduled for 10:50 local time at Phillip Island, with the Friday order placing Bezzecchi and Aprilia in a significant early position. Luca Marini took no further part after completing only a handful of morning laps and will aim to return to action on Saturday.
